Descriptions with illustrations of epitaphs of famous people, both ancient and modern. The plates has been used before in ”Monumenta sepulcrorum st. Sigfrid Rybisch expressa per Tob. Fendt”, from 1574. M. Z. Boxhorn (1612-53), Dutch philologist and critic. He declined an invitation by Axel Oxenstierna to come to Stockholm and to the court of Queen Christina, and instead he became professor in Leyden after Daniel Heinsius.

Kartorna löst bilagda, Danmarkskartan lagad och uppfodrad, med stor bildförlust. Återkommande brunfläckiga sidor, emellanåt kraftigt, enstaka småfläckar och enstaka understrykningar med rödkrita. Svag fuktrand mot slutet. Samtida pergamentband. Med professor Carl Aurivillius namnteckning på frampärmens insida, daterad 1783. Både Bibl. danica och Thesaurus anger tre kartor. Kartorna är en Danmarkskarta, en Islandskarta, en över hertigdömet Holstein och en över Fyn. Islandskartan av Carolous Flandro är densamma som sedan kom till användning först i Janssons och sedan i Blaeus stora Atlaser. Ståtligt exemplar av den nya danska rikshistorien på latin, vilken skulle ersätta Saxos krönika som internationell gångbar dansk historia. Detta är första delen, vilket var allt som publicerades i samtiden. Den andra delen trycktes först 1740. Jobbet att få fram en ny rikshistoria på latin hade pågått i Danmark sedan mitten av 1500-talet, efter att publicerandet av Johannes Magnus svenska krönika 1554 gjort behovet märkbart. Ett stort antal danska historiker och rikshistoriografer hade i tur och ordning engagerats, Svaning, Vedel, Krag, Lyschander m.fl., men ingen blev färdigt. Arild Huitfelds stora historieverk som utkom under denna tid är skriven på danska. Slutligen utsåg man två rikshistoriografer, Pontanus och Johannes Meursius, och under 1630-talet publicerades inte mindre än två olika danska historieverk, varav Pontanus är det största. (Se Skovgaard-Petersen för alla turerna kring detta). Johannes Isaac Pontanus (1571-1639) från Helsingör studerade både Leiden och i England. Han blev nära vän med den inflytelserika Arild Huitfeldt, och jobbade ett tag som assistent åt denne, vilket skulle få stor betydelse för hans danska historia. Han blev 1604 professor i Harderwijk i Holland, där han stannade till sin död, och där han utgav en stor mängd verk i historia och geografi. 1618 blev han så även dansk rikshistoriograf, med uppgiften att skriva den danska historien på latin, vars första del skulle ta 13 år i anspråk. Resten av livet jobbade han med fortsättningen, perioden 1448-1588, vilken han fullbordade strax före sin död. Denna del utgavs dock inte förrän 1740 av E. J. von Westphalen i ”Monumenta inedita rerum Germanicarum”. Carl Aurivillius (1717-86) var professor i österländska språk i Uppsala, bibelöversättare och medlem i Gustav III:s bibelkommission. Hans bibliotek såldes på två auktioner i Uppsala 1787 resp. 1788. Envoyén Gustaf d’Albedyhlls (1758-1819) boksamling ärvdes av hans son Carl Gustaf Eichstedt d’Albedyhll (1800-56), som därigenom tillsammans med egna förvärv byggde upp en mycket stor samling, f.f.a. inom nordisk historia. Denna samling skulle sålts på auktion 1843, men köptes i stället i sin helhet av Carl Jedvard Bonde, f.ö. samma år som denne efterträdde d’Albedyhll som överceremonimästare.

Utförligt om begravningsskick i olika delar av världen, i Slesvig-Holstein i synnerhet, den nordiska asatron jämförd med övrig hednisk religion, fornfynd, och om kristnandet av Norden, inklusive Grönland och Island. I verket om guldhornet från Tönder (numera i Rosenbergs slott) behandlar han även hornmusik. Troels Arnkiel (1639-1712) var luthersk teolog, pastor i Apenrade och fornforskare. Han gjorde själv utgrävningar i Munkvolstrup i Sydslesvig. Hans arbeten anses fortfarande ha värde för Slesvig-Holsteins fornhistoria.

Bygdén hänvisar till Barbier som påstår att de fem första kapitlena skall vara översatta av P. Richelet. Från Warmholtz bibliotek har den via Gjörwell gått till vinhandlaren Daniel Georg Nescher, som enligt Bring (C. G. Warmholtz och Louis De Geers bibliotek på Christineholm, s. 73) förvärvade ansenliga mängder av Warmholtz böcker. Neschers stora bibliotek inköptes 1828 av Kungliga biblioteket och därifrån har denna sålts som dubblett, troligen på 1831-års stora dubblettförsäljning. Köpare där var antagligen Carl Gustaf Eichstedt d’Albedyhll, vars böcker till stor del köptes av Carl Jedvard Bonde 1843.

Uellner 501. Krok 128. Stafleu 1886. The very rare first edition, printed in only 100 copies, ”Centum exemplaria tantum typis exscripta”, of which this is nr. 10, numbered in ink. This is the first consolidated edition of Fries’ large work on the Swedish hymenomycetae. Some parts were published earlier in 22 dissertations between 1851 and 1854. The preface contains a short autobiography by Fries entitled ”Historiola studii mei mycologici”. Later reprints in 1938 and 1963. Fine provenances. Nils Johan Wilhelm Scheutz (1836-89) was a pupil of Fries in Uppsala and wrote his theses in 1857. He become a teacher in Växjö and published several works on the botany of Småland. He is probably the receiver of this copy number 10, a numbering that is probably written by Fries himself.

In the 1850’s Louis Pasteur set out to challenge the dominant view that fermentation was caused by a chemical reaction where sugar was transformed into alcohol and carbon dioxide. The ”Mémoire sur la fermentation appelée lactique” was the opening salvo. This first publication is an abridged version of the fifteen page essay which was published the following year in ”Mémoires de la Société des Sciences, de l'Agriculture et des Arts de Lille” and ”Annales de Chimie et de Physique”Gerald L. Geison writes in ”Dictionary of Scientific Biography”: ”Emile Duclaux has suggested that two factors induced Pasteur to focus first on the relatively unimportant lactic fermentation (most familiar as the process producing sour milk) rather than alcoholic fermentation: (1) a large quantity of amyl alcohol is produced during lactic fermentation and (2) alcoholic fermentation had already been thoroughly investigated without seriously threatening the dominant chemical theory. In a sense, unless and until living organisms were implicated in other fermentations, advocates of the chemical theory could continue to doubt the essential role of living yeast in alcoholic fermentation. […] Pasteur’s memoir expressed the basic approach and point of view which informed all of his subsequent work on fermentation.” Pasteur makes the claim that “just as an alcoholic ferment exists–namely, brewer’s yeast–which is found wherever sugar breaks down into alcohol and carbonic acid–so too there is a special ferment–a lactic yeast–always present when sugar becomes lactic acid.” ”Throughout the memoir”, Geison continues ”Pasteur more nearly assumed than proved that lactic yeast “is a living organism,…that its chemical action on sugar corresponds to its development and organization,”

Stort och komplett exemplar med tre graverade titelblad, fem graverade porträtt och 24 graverade planscher, varav 13 utvikbara. Det svenska originalet utkom 1740. Den tyska översättningen gjordes av Johannes Heinrich Heubel och finansierades av Johan Fr. König; ”Såsom handlande trodde han på detta Förlag göra en wacker winst, men fant sig i sit hopp bedragen”, raljerar Warmholtz - som inte döljer sitt ogillande av Nordberg. Tredje delen, som innehåller källpublikationer och register, inleds med en biografi över Nordberg. Den påtagliga skillnaden jämfört med den svenska upplagan är förstås illustrationsmaterialet. Den svenska upplagan har två porträtt, Karl XII och Nordberg, graverade av E. Geringius. Dessa är i den tyska upplagan fint omgraverade av C. Fritzsch och de har utökats med Fredrik I, Adolf Fredrik och den unge Gustav. Mynt- och medaljavbildningarna återfinns i båda varianterna, men i den tyska tillkommer dessutom både de 24 planscherna med batalj- och slaguppställningar över de mer kända slagen och belägringarna, graverade efter teckningar av Zacharias Wolff, och de fina, stora kapitelvinjetterna, slutvinjetter och graverade initialer. Gravörer är far och son Christian Fritzsch m.fl. Jöran Nordberg (1677-1744) blev prästvigd och utnämnd till predikant vid artilleriet 1703. Som sådan följde han armén under Karl XII:s fälttåg och gjorde där snabbt karriär och avancerade till hovpredikant. Vid Poltava råkade Nordberg i rysk fångenskap och tillbringade många år i Moskva, där han samarbetade med Carl Piper om de svenska fångarnas välbefinnande. 1715 blev han utväxlad och kunde återvända till Sverige och blev så småningom kyrkoherde i Klara församling i Stockholm. Från år 1731 fick han tjänstledigt för att på heltid jobba med det stora verket om Karl XII.

First French edition, with the rare extra appendix ”Relation en forme de factum” (15 pp.) about the printing of the work, which according to Bring lacks in all Swedish libraries. Aubrey de La Motraye spent twenty-six years travelling through northern Europe to Tartary and the Levant, beginning with a tour through Sweden in 1696, visiting Gothenburg, Skara, Trollhättan, Stockholm, Falun, Lappland etc. He was close to Charles XII of Sweden and, during his tour in Turkey, visited him at Bender. A number of the plates in this work are signed by Hogarth; they illustrate antiquities and genre scenes of Swedish and Turkish life, with dancing dervishes and harems. His travel accunt was first printed in English in London in 1723. This French edition contains four plates which do not appear in the English edition. His travels in Germany, Russia, Poland etc., was published in a separate work in 1732. The first Swedish translation was published by Hugo Hultenberg in 1918.From the library of Isabella Charlotte de Rohan, vicomte de Chabot (1784-1868). She was an Irish aristocrat and diarist, born Isabella Charlotte FitzGerald. She married Louis William de Rohan-Chabot an exiled french officer living in London. After many adventures the couple returned to France and Paris after the defeat of Napoleon. There she took her duties as a lady-in-waiting to the duchesse d'Orléans and living at the Château de Villiers and the Palais-Royal.

Limited editon of 750 numbered copies, of which this is nr 59, issued a day before the trade edition. Inserted is the Lawrence of Arabia Memorial pamphlet. (4) pp. O’Brien A041. This edition published at July 29, 1935 and the trade edition at July 30. This limited edition contains three extra facsimiles, not present in the trade edition, and four plates in colour, black and white in the other. This copy has also the frontispice portrait, which O’Brian does not mention to the limited edition. This is the third edition, but the first public. The book was first printed for friends in 1922 and to subscribers in 1926.

Jordan, Bibliographie zur geschichte des Festungsbau 0752. Cockle 668 note. This is the first Italian translation of the improved Spanish version of Collado’s work on artillery. This work was first published in Italian, in Venice, in 1586. Dissatified with the Italian edition Collado made a new Spanish version, which was published in Milan in 1592. Spanish was Collado’s native tongue. ”The Pratica Manuale in its second form is sufficiently different to be considered a distinct work. Collado, dissatified, probably, with the first attempt rewrote the book in his native tongue” (Cockle). The present 1606-edition is the first Italian translation of the new version. It was reprinted in 1641.

Blackmer 1065, note. First rare French translation of Berkenhout’s work on Paestum, ”The Ruines of Paestum”, published in English in 1767 (with only 4 plates). The other plates are added by Drumond. The French editor Gabriel-Pierre Drumont was professor of architecture and had taken part in marquis de Marigny’s important journey in 1749-51 together with Jacques Germain Soufflot and Cochin, and which took him to Paestum already in 1750. He had published some plates from the journey in 1764. After the publishing of Thomas Major’s large book on Paestum in 1768, both in French and English, Drumont here took the opportunity to publish his plates once again, partly re-engraved, together with Berkenhout’s text in a French translation by Jacques de Varennes. The extra engraved page contains advertisments for other works by Drumont. According to the preface the work is intended as a supplement to Major’s work, and it is dedicated to marquis de Marigny.There are two double page plates with three motifs from Herculaneum, one plan of the forum, one profile of a catacomb and one ”Partie d’un plan d’un grand monument” excavated in 1750. The Forum here is the same building that Cochin and Bellicard call ”Basilica”.

Med den extra planschen nummer 10, vilket ger 94 planscher. Detta är den illustrerade praktupplagan de svenska svamparna. De fina planscherna är huvudsakligen efter teckningar av Elias Pettersson och Petter Åkerlund. Svampbeskrivningarna hade tidigare publicerats i ”Monographia hymenomycetum Sueciae, (1857-63) och de praktiska detaljerna delvis i ”Anteckningar öfver de i Sverige växande ätliga svampar” (1836). Även i detta verk justerar dock Fries detaljer i sina släkt- och artnamn. Till skillnad från de tidigare mykologiskt rent vetenskapliga verken hade detta stora arbete även en folkbildande praktisk funktion, att höja medvetenheten om svamparnas användning och värde. Här omtalas var man äter svamp, giftsvampar, svampars beståndsdelar, insamlingsråd, uppväxt och fortplantning m.m. Verket fick en enastående verkan och blev starten för en snabbt växande svensk populärmykologi, och det följdes snabbt av billigare och enklare verk med färgillustrationer av svampar, av mykologer som J. W. Smitt och N. J. Andersson. Elias Fries (1794-1878) från Femsjön i Småland, ofta kallad ”mykologins fader”, blev snabt ett världsnamn inom botaniken och framförallt inom mykologin. Hans stora genombrott, ”Systema mycologicum”, började utges redan 1821. Hans världsrykte stärktes genom verk som ”Epicris systematis mycologici” (1836-38), ”Hymenomycetus Europaei” (1838) m.fl. Han främsta insatser låg inom systematiken och beskrivningen av svamparna. Han tillhörde dock den romantiska naturuppfattningens så hans indelning i klasser och underklasser är numera obsolet, men ”...his distinction of different spore colors still has important taxonomic value, and he is especially remembered for his ability to describe species.” (DSB).

Ett liknande samlingsband återfinns i katalogen över Carl Gustaf Eichstedt d’Albedyhlls samling, vilket köptes i sin helhet av Carl Jedvard Bonde, med nummer Folio 91, och kommer då från Gustaf d’Albedyhll.

Several earlier collections have had the title ”Corpus juris militaris”. The first edition by Schulze was published in 1687 (revised 1693 and 1700) with the subtitle: ”... Insonderheit Das Churfürstl. Brandenburgische vormahls mit des weyland Herrn Eberhard Hoyers notis versehen”, also published as ”Corpus Iuris Militaris Brandenburgicum”. This ”Swedish edition” is a reprint, probably almost a titel-ausgabe, of the Berlin 1700 edition because it does not contain any extra Swedish material apart from the title page and a preface. The anonymous editor have copied the preface by Schulze from the 1687-edition but changed the beginning of the last paragraph from ”Und dieses hat nach distrahirten Exemplarien unsers Chur-Brandenburgischen Kriegs-Rechts, unter andern den hiesigen Buchführer Robert Völcker bewogen,...” to ”Und dieses hat den Verleger bewogen, nicht allein die Schwedische Kriegs-Articul wieder aufs neue zu Verlegen,...” Both prefaces are present here.

The plates depict the clothes and the style of the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie at the time shortly before the revolution, with formal and everyday clothes for both men and women, and also for children, as well as theater and opera costumes. The present set lacks plates 20, 23, 31, 62 and 77-80, and also the 3 last text leaves in volume one, and in volume two plates 105, 123, 136, 139 and 160.

For this work, which goes far beyond a topographical description of ancient Europe, Clüver (or Cluverius) was awarded the 'Geographus Academicus' and became professor at the university of Leyden. A second edition was published in 1631. It begins with a poem to Clüver by Daniel Heinsius followed by Tacitus’ ”Liber de Germania” in Lipsius’ textedition. From a Swedish point of view, Georg Stiernhielm wrote “Anticluverius”, published in Stockholm by Hadorph in 1685, against it and its thesis that the origin of the Goths was to be found - not in Sweden - but in northern Germany.

Något nötta kanter, reva längs ned med förlust av ett ord. Warmholtz 2509. Första upplagan av Johannes Messenius mycket viktiga svenska historieverk, postumt utgiven av Johan Peringskiöld. Här med det nästan alltid saknade porträttet av Messenius, graverad av Truls Arwidsson. Utgiven i 14 delar, numrerade 1 till 15 (nummer 14 utkom aldrig) av planerade 20. De första åtta utgör första delen och de övriga andra. Johannes Messenius (1579-1636) var sin tids mest betydande svenska historiker, med ett tragiskt livsöde. Han blev professor i juridik och politik vid Uppsala universitet 1609. Men efter stridigheter med Johannes Rudbeckius flyttade han sitt eget kollegium till Stockholm och till en tjänst vid kansliet. Stridigheter fortsatte dock, nu med Nils Chesnecopherus och Erik Jöransson Tegel, och år 1616 blev han dömd till döden för papistiska stämplingar, vilket dock mildrades till livstids deportation till Kajaneborgs fästning i Finland. Där bodde han sedan i tjugo år (år 1635 mildrades dock straffet till förvisning till Österbotten, och han bosatte sig i Uleåborg), och där skrev han detta sitt livsverk, Scondia illustrata. Detta verk bildade epok. Han införde en viss kritik mot Johannes Magnus och dennes sagohistoria, men framförallt använde han sig av mycket arkivmaterial i sin medeltida del, och behandlade detta kritiskt, och för den äldre historien förde han in ett helt nytt källmaterial, den isländska sagokretsen. Det sistnämnda, inte minst historien om Oden-Othinus som vandrade till Sverige från Troja och grundade Uppsala, fick för den efterföljande svenska historieskrivningen en stor betydelse, ända fram till E. G. Geijer. Eric Johannes Schroderus (1609-39) fick efter sin magisterpromotion 1635 order av förmyndarregeringen att besöka Messenius i Uleåborg och skaffa information om arbetet med Scondia illustrata. Han anlände i januari 1636 och stannade till Messenius död i november samma år. Han rapporterade regelbundet hem och skickade avskrifter ur arbetet. Dessa brev finns dock ej bevarade. Efter återkomsten till Stockholm, lämnade Schroderus den 11 december in sin slutrapport, ”Relation om D. Johannis Messenii Scondia illustrata”. Denna finns bevarad i sammanlagt 4 avskrifter, tre på KB och en i UB. Rapporten sammanfattar kort innehåller i de 20 banden, av vilka han hunnit läsa tio. Avskriften som återfinns här innehåller sammanfattningen av delarna 14 och 16-20, dvs de som ej blev tryckta.

The first work was published anonymously by Festus Hommius (1576-1642), a Dutch Calvinist theologian. The international Synod of Dordrecht held from November 13, 1618 to May 9, 1619 by the Dutch Reformed Church to settle the strong controversy initiated by the rise of Arminianism. Voting representatives from eight foreign Reformed churches were also invited. Among these groups were also Anglican delegates from the Church of England and the Church of Scotland. It it followed by four more anti remonstrant pamphlets, the last is against Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt.

Under bilden rysk text i tre rader. Vid slaget vid byn Lesna segrade Peter den store över Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupts svenska kår som var på väg från Riga till Ukraina med förstärkningar till huvudarmén. Segern fick stor betydelse för den ryska stridsmoralen och utnyttjades också duktigt i den ryska propagandan; slaget kallades senare för ”Poltavaslagets moder”. För Karl XII innebar förlusten att han fick ändra sina planer för det fortsatta fälttåget, och bl.a. avstå från marschen mot Moskva. Den ryske hovmålaren Pierre-Denis Martin le Jeune (1663-1742) målade ett antal stora bataljmålningar över ryska segrar i Nordiska kriget, vilka graverades av bl.a. Charles Simonneau (1645-1728) och Nikolas Martin de Larmessin (1640-1725).

Fine copy of the first edition of Savigny’s monumental ”System des heutigen Römischen Rechts”, which is a work about the contemporary Roman law in Germany, and one of his most important. It is here complete with the sometimes missing Index volume published by O. L. Heuser in 1851. The German jurist Friedrich Carl von Savigny (1779-1861) is the most important member of the influential ”Historic School of Jurists”, which influenced by romanticism reacted against the natural law theories of the Enlightenment and claimed that national laws must be based on specific national cultural backgrounds and civilisations, an organic development of the Volkgeist. In this work which deals with the history of the sources, the literature and the teaching of Roman law from the fifth through the fifteenth centuries Savigny transcended Roman law in many respects, adapting it to modern requirements or developing new solutions, many of which have become influential in German and other legal science. And also ”... it initiated the modern study of medieval jurisprudence and has served ever since, corrected in many respects but unequaled, as the standard work on the history of medieval jurisprudence in Europe” (Walter Wilhelm in Enzyclopedia.com.) His influence was large also in Sweden and in the Nordic countries. The works attributed to Albertus Magnus were not written by him, but by followers who drew (sometimes faultily) from his work. Suggested authors have been Thomas of Brabant and Henry of Saxony, but they have since been ruled out.Balduinus book is an enlarged version of a tract (Aurum Aurae) originally published in 1673. This edition (including the appendix on the unpaginated thirteen pages at the end, with separate title: ”Phosphorus Hermeticus sive magnes luminaris”.) was also published by Georg Heinrich Fromann in Frankfurt and Leipzig the same year.Balduinus (Christian Adolf Baldewein, 1632-82) was a magistrate in Großenhain in Sachsen. He was a dedicated alchemist and convinced that the ”prime matter” from which the Philosopher’s stone was made was volatile and could only be found in the air. It was when experimenting with this process that he chanced upon the phosphorous substance that came to bear his name (Balduins phosphorous, actually Calcium nitrate). It is this ”light magnet” that is described in the ”Phosphorus Hermeticus”. The main work "deals with the extraction of gold from the air by universal magnetism" (Thorndike VIII, p.381). Also contains a celebratory poem ”Madrigal” by Johann Engelhart.
