London, David Nutt, [ca 1895]. Cheap edition (two volumes in one). 23 x 16 cm. (4), 382; 546 pp. Publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering. Spine ends and corners bumped, spine just slightly faded, front joint partially cracked but binding still quite firm. Owner's signatures on title-leaf and verso of first free endpaper, verso of last free endpaper with some annotations in pencil, interior with some occasional pencil markings in the margins. Condition Very Good to VG-. The so-called cheap edition (with the two volumes of the work bound together in one volume) of this major ethnographical work on women in Turkey during the Ottoman empire by British folklorist Lucy Mary Jane Garnett. The work was first published in 1890-1891, this is the second (and seemingly equally scarce) edition, most probably published in the mid 1890s. Part I deals with Christian women, whereas parts II and III deals with The Jewish women of Turkey and the Moslem women of Turkey respectively. The appendix of volume II, "with concluding chapters on the origins of matriarchy by John S. Stuart-Glennie" seems to have been excluded from this edition.
