Fine black marocco back tooled in blind with dark green three dimensional calf boards, top edge gilt. The front board picturing Joyces face after the books first illustration made by Saul Field. Housed in a black a bit worn solander box. The front and back boards are slightly uneven darkened. Book condition near fine.

Disbound, plate with minor tear, First leaves with minor worming in inner margin, lower margin with light waterstain throughout but overall a very good copy. An account of a collection of herbarium specimens of Surinam (Dutch Guiana) plants, given to Linné by Sweden's King Gustav III. Many of the new species were later included by his son Carl von Linné (filius) in his Supplementum plantarum (1781).

IV, 133, (1) pp. + 3 plates (encompassing a total of 5 pages) with photographs + 3 lithographed maps (2 folding) in colour in pocket at the rear. Later, marbled boards (Leonard Gustafssons Bokbinderi, Stockholm) with green spine label and sprinkled edges, original printed wrappers preserved. Lower edge of front board slightly bumped, the printed wrappers slightly soiled and foxed and with some tape-reinforcements along the edges. Plates with some minor creasing at corners and edges, map number 3 with a couple of tiny tears and creases along the edges, maps else very well kept. A second part, "Länderkundliche Beschreibung" was published in 1913.(Ergänzungsheft Nr. 4 der Mitteilungen aus den Deutschen Schutzgebieten.)

Contemporary full mottled calf with lavishly gilt spine, green spine labels, inner and outer dentelles, gilt edges and marbled endpapers. Corners quite heavily bumped, spine ends of volume II slightly chipped, rear joint with ca 2 cm split at tail of spine. Owner's bookplate on paste-down endpaper. Interior with some occasional foxing, a handful of pages with some minor tears (ca 2-4 cm) and tiny chips at the edges. Volume II with pages 82-96 bound in an incorrect order, text nonetheless complete. Complete works of Ovid translated to French by Jean-Jacques Lefranc, Marquis de Pompignan (1709-1784). This edition was printed in London 1799 and imported to Russia and sumptuously bound by prominent booksellers Francois Ryss and Joseph Saucet as indicated by the bookseller's label on the past-down endpaper in volume I.
