A very good copy. Aloys Zötl (1803-1887), Austrian painter and master dyer, known for his paintings of fantastical animals and other natural history subjects. Rediscovered by the surrealists in the twentieth century. ("The Signs of Man" nr. 12). Printed in 5000 numbered copies, this is no. 200.

Berlin, Ernst Siegfried Mittler und Sohn, 1908. 32,5 x 24,5 cm. X, 150 pp. + 63 plates with photographs and 1 folding map in colour. Contemporary, brown half leather binding with red spine labels, sparsely gilt spine and four raised bands, original front wrapper preserved. Corners just slightly bumped and rubbed, the original wrapper slightly soiled and with some pencil markings as well as small tear (ca 1 cm) and a couple of tiny holes at the upper edge. Interior slightly creased throughout at the upper corner, the folding map with a couple of tiny creases aat the corners, else fine.

With 275 illustrations in the text. Publisher's pictorial cloth, top edge gilt. Boards just slightly soiled, spine ends and corners slightly bumped and frayed, paste-down endpaper partly cracked, binding still firm. The portrait of Emin Pascha with some slight foxing and dampstaining at the edges, plate XXVI with ca 2 cm tear at lower edge, a couple of pages with a couple of tiny tears at the fore-edge, interior else fine. Important work on the exploration of central and eastern Africa.

Vol. 1 with small tear at head spine, and between two sections, between p. 112 and 113 slightly loose in the binding. (See image.) Vol. 2 with slightly bumped lower backside corner and 1 cm tear in cloth at upper frontside corner. Both volumes lightly bumped at head and foot spines. Fore edges untrimmed. Both volumes has previous owner's name and date in ink on first free endpapers (which are slightly discoloured in both cases), exlibris and small sticker from Foyles bookstore, London, at first paste-down endpapers.
