An essay by Heinrich Jost: ”Giambattista Bodoni. 1740-1813. Der Typograph der Könige und König der Typograph”. 10 pages showing Bodoni Roman, Italic semi bold and titling face followed by typographic samples. In 1926 the German foundry Bauer produced a metal version of Bodoni’s typefaces, thanks to designs by Heinrich Jost and punches hand-engraved by Louis Höll. The proportions of Bauer Bodoni were closer to the original models than the ATF, calibrating the thickness of the strokes and maintaining some important details.

Hall of Femmes is a project initiated by the design studio Hjärta Smärta in 2009 with the objective of bringing female graphic designers and art directors into the spotlight. Lillian Bassman began as an assistant to Alexey Brodovitch at Harper’s Bazaar by the end of the 1940’s, in the very epicentre of the golden age of the American magazine culture. In 1945she became art director for the newly launched Junior Bazaar, a fashion magazine focused on teenagers. Junior Bazaarfunctioned as an experimental workshop and a hot-bed for all kinds of young creative talents. When the magazine discontinued publication after merely three years, Lillian Bassman instead trained herself to become a photographer and became one of Harper’s Bazaars most hired photographers.

Paula Scher began her graphic design career as a record cover art director at both Atlantic and CBS Records in the 1970s. In 1984 she co-founded Koppel & Scher, and in 1991 she joined the design firm Pentagram as a partner. After a three decades of career, her images have come to be visually identified with the cultural life of New York City. Scher has developed identity and branding systems, environmental graphics, packaging and publication designs for a broad range of clients that includes, among others, Bloomberg, Coca-Cola, Bausch+Lomb, Perry Ellis, MOMA, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and the New 42nd Street. Paula is a member of the Art Directors Club of Fame, and in 2001 she was awarded the profession’s highest honor, the AIGA medal, in recognition of her distinguished achievements and contributions to the field. In 2006 she was awarded the Type Directors Club medal.
