2 volumes. Adam Black and John Stark, Edinburgh 1828. 8vo. VI+[I]+527 + [4]+515 pages. IV+VIII engraved plates. Elegant contemporary, light brown, polished morocco, title labels in red and green and lettering in gilt to spines. Armorial stamp with an Earl's coronet, an arm holding an arrow and the initial M under the device "Non eget arcu" in gilt to both front boards. Bookplate to pastedown in both volumes. Light foxing to plates. * A fine example of an English armorial binding. The stamp belongs to William Hugh Elliott 3rd Earl of Minto (1814-1891). Educated at Trinity College Cambridge, he served as ambassador to Berlin and other trusted offices. His son Gilbert John 4th Earl (1845-1914, served as Viceroy and Governor-General of India) used the same stamp, but it seems likely that this book would have sat more naturally in the library of the 3rd Earl.

Georg Matthias Drevenstädt, Stettin 1765. (4)+4+34+(2 blanks)+4 pages. BOund in contemporary full calf binding. Some wear along the edges. Worm hole to the upper right margin, not affecting text. Very good. * The formula of the 'Sqauring the Circle' has been a mathematical puzzle since the days of Ancient Greece. This is one attempt to solve it at the height of the Enlightenment movement - but with no success.** The last four leaves are a advertisement from Schleswig in 1783 for B. Paulsen's book on the same subject, planned to be published. Nevertheless, the work was never published - most likely because Paulsen had not solved the riddle anyway: His advertisement show his first attampts, so somebody must have countered him before the process continued.

2 bind i 1. 1: Sally B. Salomon, I Commission hos P.G. Philipsen, København (1848). (39+(1) sider. Med orig. bogtrykt papiromslag. 2: Trykt hos J.D. Quist, København 1852. XVI+77+(2) sider. Senere grønt helshiringsbind. Tilskrift på forsatsbladet. Sidste sider gulplettede. (Vagn Dybdahl, DBL 4,42).
