Med 2 kobberstukne helfigursportrætter af Sigismund og Karl IX samt træskåret vignet på side 137 i bind 2. Samtidige halvbind af brunt kalveskind. Permerne med overfladiske skrammer. Begge stik med en rift langs folden (ca. 5-6 cm). * Den første officielle fremstilling af det blodige og afgørende tidehverv i svensk historie, hvor kong Johan III's katolsk-opdragede søn Sigismund i 1590'erne blev bekriget af sin farbror, den senere Karl IX. Sidstnævnte gik af med sejren, og Sigismund måtte fortrække til Polen. Efterfølgende blev der gjort håndfast op med de svenske højadelige, der havde støttet kong Sigismund, ved det såkaldte Linköpings blodbad. Krigen med Dannemarck er selvfølgelig Kalmarkrigen.

Publisher's black cloth with blindtooled decorations and gilt lettering on spine. Spine and hinges carefully renewed, reusing most of the original backstrip. Foxing throughout. * The first American edition of H.C. Andersen's first official autobiography, following the first British (1847), all based on the German version published earlier the same year. The German and English editions preceded the Danish with almost a century; it was published in 1942. Andersen's autobiography was an important key to his almost explosive international success in the 1840s, closely linked to the publication of his fairy tales. Andersen eagerly followed his American publications but never visited the U.S., Though always fond of travelling, he could not overcome his fear of the Atlantic crossing.

The first sheet of paper has been folded at the time in a slightly wrong angle, so the trimming of the book has shaved off a slight bit of the titleleaf. Some dampstaining almost through out the book. One page with a one centimeter closed tear to the margin, not affecting text. * Francesco Filelfo [1398-1481] was an Italian renaissance humanist.

Filing number written on back. * Henri Matisse [1869-1954] was a French painter. He was known as one of the Fauves between 1900 - 1905, but was later known as a modern art painter with a flair for colours. Matisse was a close friend of Picasso, whom he's met at Gertrude Stein's Paris salon. In 1947 he published the art book 'Jazz', which was full of his, now famous, paper cut collages.

Small tear to leaf i4, not affecting text. * Henri Estienne/ Henricus Stephanus (the younger) [1528/31-1598] was third generation in the line of great renaissance printers in Paris and Geneva. This work was written by himself and immensely popular in his own lifetime (originally published in 1566), being reprinted 12 times in the next 16 years.

Formålet med Steen Billes lange togt 1845-47 var at overdrage de danske besiddelser i Indien til Storbritannien, indlede kolonisering af Nikobarerne og foretage etnografiske og hydrografiske undersøgelser. Koloniseringen af Nikobarerne blev hurtigt opgivet, men Bille hjembragte betydeligt videnskabeligt materiale. ** Account on the Danish circumnavigation of the globe 1845-47. The purpose of the voyage was to lead the transition of the Danish colonies in India to Britain and to gather scientific material. Bille´s account is illustrated with etnographic litographs and maps.
