First edition of this controversial but influential work on the origin and essence of the Gothic style. "Gothic turns out to be anything Worringer approves of - indeed by the end of the book it seems to include Baroque as well - and the reason that he approves of it is because its 'will' is a reflection of the psychology of northern Germanic man, in other words of Worringer himself /.../ His final explanation of Gothic is ultimately racial, as when he claims at the end of the book: 'Wherever Germanic elements are strongly present, a racial connection in the widest sense is observable, which in spite of racial differences in the ordinary sense, is unmistakeably operative, and which is as it were established and recorded for all time in historical phenomena like the Gothic. For the Germans, as we have seen, are the conditio sine qua non of Gothic'." (David Watkin, The Rise of Architectural History,1980, p. 16).
