In 1937 Moholy-Nagy opened the 'New Bauhaus' school of design in Chicago; it re-opened it in 1939 as 'The Chicago School of Design' and was renamed 'The Institute of Design' in 1944.

The 88 plates are numbered I-LVII and LIX-LXXXIX but no plate "LVIII" has been removed; between the catalogue entries to plates LVII and LIX there is an entry referring to the two watercolours reproduced on the plate facing page 14. Apparently this was originally planned to be plate LVIII. Exhibition catalogue with entries including dating, size, earlier exhibitions, and location unless in a private collection (the majority are). Introductory texts by Emil Waldmann and Max Liebermann.
