Complete price-lists glued onto insides of rear boards. A set of these two descriptive and fully illustrated catalogues of large embroidered badges known as 'Badges of Rank' or 'Mandarin Squares' which were sewn onto the surcoats of officials in Imperial China. The research for this work began in 1927, but "the depression stopped everything, and for years our book was only the bare materials and an idea in the mind of Albert Simons /.../ The text was rewritten, and we now see the fruition of ten years of thought and work in this book" (from the foreword). The first edition appeared in 1938.

Text book and loose plates as issued in a printed, pictorial cloth portfolio. Light external wear to corners and spine, two 2-4 cm tears in the cloth at bottom of spine, otherwise fine; contents in very good condition.
