The research for this work began in 1927, but "the depression stopped everything, and for years our book was only the bare materials and an idea in the mind of Albert Simons /.../ The text was rewritten, and we now see the fruition of ten years of thought and work in this book" (from the foreword). The first edition appeared in 1938.
