A set of the uniformly designed book editions of Nairn's attack on current British urban planning, originally published as special numbers of The Architectural Review (hence the pagination). Pictorial wrappers, a very fine copy. Nouvelle édition revue et corrigée (second, revised edition). Although publishing year on title leaf is 1933, according to a colophon the book was printed on 25 November 1932. (Mon Camarade. Collection de livres pour l'enfance). Vaillant-Couturier was the pen name of Paul Charles Couturier. Both he and the artist Jean Lurçat were members of the French Communist Party PCF, and Couturier was, intermittently, editor-in-chief of its newspaper L'Humanité. "Jean sans pain" tells the story of a starving orphan who befriends a hare that can fly and a flock of partridges. They encounter rich but dishonest people, and end up in the midst of battle during the First World War. The moral of the story is that war is ugly, and that he who does not work shall not eat.
