The focusing ability of a lens or mirror type antenna is directly related to its width in wavelengths of the radar wave. The wider the antenna is in wavelengths, the smaller the angle of the beam that contains 50% of the radiated energy. The smaller the angle of the beam, the farther the radar can see the target and the more precisely the angle of the target can be known. Nike tracking radars had an effective antenna width of about 150 wavelengths. (The antennas were actually physically a little larger, but there are edge effects which decrease the focusing effect of the edge areas.)

In the early twentieth century, Jennings began studying inheritance and evolution in protozoans and introduced new experimental methods for laboratory study. By 1920 he had left the laboratory to popularize genetics and harmonize the relationship between biology, religion, and the humanities.

With his colleagues there, he developed the matrix form of quantum mechanics, progressed toward an interpretation of the new formalism, and applied the quantum theory, along with electron spin, to the Zeeman effect, the helium atom, and other old problems. In July 1924 Heisenberg qualified to teach on the university level by presenting to the Göttingen faculty a modification of the quantum rules for the Zeeman effect. "An interesting historical footnote is the red ruby laser, demonstrated independently by Schawlow at Bell and by Irwin Wieder at Varian Associates, whose papers both arrived at Physical Review Letters on December 19, 1960, and were published in the same issue.21 Maiman’s laser used "pink" ruby, in which the chromium concentration was low enough that chromium atoms did not interact with each other. At higher concentrations the chromium atoms gave the ruby crystal a deeper red appearance, and their interaction created a four-level laser system with emission lines at 701.0 and 704.1 nm - if the material was cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature. Both Schawlow and Wieder demonstrated flashlamp-pumped lasing on the red ruby laser, but like the uranium and samarium lasers, red ruby never proved practical."
