Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1909. Large8vo. In contemporary full cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted dowbn front end-paper. Light wear to extremities and hinges a bit weak. Internally nice and clean. XI, (1), 422 pp. First English translation the founding work on Plant ecology and Plant communities. “It was Warming, in an 1895 Danish botanical textbook called Plantesamfund (Plant Communities), who defined the nature of the discipline. He pointed out that organisms, plant and animal, live in highly developed communities, the tenure of which depends on such things as temperature, rainfall, soil constitution, elevation, and countless other factors. He noted that communities change over time, moving toward what he called "climax" communities, which will remain dominant until conditions change. But he also advised that conditions will change, through wildfire, or floods, or man-made alterations, and that such changes are often irreversible, so that a forest turned into grassland will seldom revert to a forest community again.” (Linda Hall) "Warming was the founder of plant ecology. The term "ecology", first used by Haeckel in 1866, was introduced into botany by H. reiter in 1885M but is was Warming who made ecology a preferred field of activity for many botanists. In "Plantesamfund" (1895) - (the work offered) - he formulated the program of his research: "To answer the question: Why each species has its own habit and habitat, why the species congregate to form definitive communities, and why these have a characteristic physiognomy.". The book created an enormous senstaion as a new attempt at grouping and characterizing the plant communities - a new phytogeographical term by which Warming meant a group of species forming a physiognomically well-defined unity, such as a meadow. In all essentials the species of a community are subject to the same external conditions arising from the ecological factors. These factors are of a fundamental importence to the ecology ofthe individual plant and the plant community. Considering water to be the most importent factor, Warming divided plant communities into four types: hydrophytic, xerophytic, halophytic, and mesophytic."(DSB XIV, p. 181).

København, 1946. Lille 4to. Ubesk. i orig. omsl. Ryggen med brugsspor, små rifter ved kapitæler, indre forreste fals lidt svag, ellers ren og pæn. 122, (2) pp.Small 4to. Uncut in the orig. wrappers. Spine a bit worn, small tears at capitals, inner front hinge a bit weak, otherwise nice and clean. The first edition of the first Dansih translation of the second of Sartre's two main philosophical works, which have both influenced 20th century philosophy greatly, and contributed immensely to the development of existentialism in general. The Danish translation is printed the same year as the French first edition, and typographically probably constitutes the best edition. It is a very nice print with wide margins and on good, thick paper. "Existentialism is a Humanism" became one of Sartre's most widely read and most critcized works, and it caused great controversies and uproar at the time of its appearance; -as opposed to his "L'Être et le Néant", all of Sartre's critics actually read this work, and so did huge parts of the population, causing the book to appear in huge numbers after the publication of the first edition. The work is the literary re-working of an exposition given by Sartre at a conference in October 1945, where he caused a scandalous discussion, which among other things led to the fact that all references to the existentialist T.E. Lawrence were omitted from the work when it appeared in print. (Contat & Rybalka p. 132). Sartre himself also disowned great parts of this work, which makes it all the more interesting, since it is the only one of his works of which he has done so. The work was reprinted numerous times during the first years, and the first edition (on vellum-paper) is very difficult to come by.

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1848. 4to. In the original wrappers, no backstrip. In "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik. Hrsg. von A.L. Crelle, 36. Band, Zweites [2] Heft". Entire issue offered. A fine and clean copy. Pp. 97-113. [Entire volume: 97-184, (4) pp. + 1 plate]. First printing of these two papers influential papers by Jacobi published in the epoch-making year 1848."In the revolutionary year of 1848 Jacobi became involved in a political discussion in the Constitutional Club. During an impromptu speech he made some imprudent remarks which brought him under fire from monarchists and republicans alike. Hardly two years before, in the dedication of volume I of his Opuscula mathematica to Friedrich Wilhelm IV, he had expressed his royalist attitude; now he had become an object of suspicion to the government. A petition of Jacobi’s to become officially associated with the University of Berlin, and thus to obtain a secure status, was denied by the ministry of education. Moreover, in June 1849 the bonus on his salary was retracted. Jacobi, who had lost his inherited fortune in a bankruptcy years before, had to give up his Berlin home. He moved into an inn and his wife and children took up residence in the small town of Gotha, where life was considerably less expensive." (DSB).

His work is a fine example of the Enlightenment's goal for cataloging and comprehending the world, offering a unique snapshot of global perspectives as understood by Europeans in the early modern period.
