Brodern skulle tjänstgöra som präst i de svenska församlingarna såväl i Delaware som i New Jersey. Även Gustaf Hesselius son John blev en etablerad och uppskattad konstnär. De svensk-amerikanska konstnärerna ägnade sig åt att uppfinna ett slags kulturell identitet i skarven mellan två kulturer - den svenska och den amerikanska. Konsten och fäderneslandet kan kallas en kulturhistorisk utställning som försöker berätta hur denna konstruktion av den svenska identiteten reflekteras just i bildkonsten. Kring sekelskiftet 1900 producerades en ansenlig mängd konst gjord i USA utifrån ett amerikanskt perspektiv. Ofta förekom motiv som lätt kunde associeras till Sverige och den svenska kulturen. Vad var egentligen svensk konst för amerikanerna? Vi vet att Anders Zorn betydde oerhört mycket i Amerika och blev en viktig konstnär där. Men förhållandet till det gamla landet var mångsidigt. För de svensk-amerikanska konstnärerna var det oerhört viktigt att visa sin självständighet gentemot Sverige, men naturligtvis på samma gång visa respekt för det gamla landet och för särarten, man ville bevara arvet. Arvet, som det tolkades av svensk-amerikanerna, gav dem ju en unik identitet bland alla de andra etniska grupperna i USA. For the Swedish-American artists, it was extremely important to show their independence towards Sweden, but of course at the same time show respect for the old country and for the uniqueness, they wanted to preserve the heritage. The heritage, as it was interpreted by the Swedish-Americans, gave them a unique identity among all the other ethnic groups in the United States.
