Broad inside gilt borders with cornerpieces. Edges of covers gilt. Signed in gold: "J. & E. Bumpus. L.2 Oxford St. W." Fine condition. Bumpus of Oxford St., a London department store that sold books, was known for classically designed, well-executed, and generally undervalued bindings produced under the Bumpus name for a substantial period, beginning in the latter part of the 19th century.

First appearance of an importent paper in which Davy's states, that the voltaic pile only works under certain conditions, and only when the conducting substance between the plates is capable of oxydating the zink. The principle discovered here guided Davy in designing new types of pile, with elements chosen from the whole variety of known metals.

This french version usually regarded as being an original work by Prévost which was first published in 1762.
