WEIL, ANDRÉ. - WEIL'S UNIFORM SPACE INTRODUCED.

Paris, Hermann & Cie, Frontwrapper: 1937, Titlepage: 1938. Lex8vo. Uncut and unopened in orig. printed wrappers. Stamps on foot of titlepage. In the series "Act. Sci. Industrielles 551, Paris, 1937". First edition of Weil's importent work on uniform topological spaces where he gives the first explicit definition of uniform structure"His most widely used innovation was in point set topology, namely the idea of uniform spaces. Such a space has no metric giving a distance between points, yet it makes sense to talk of different sequences "converging at the same rate" to different points. In particular there is a well-defined notion of uniform convergence of a series of functions from one uniform space to another." (DSB).

New York, International Business Machines Corporation, (1957). Royal8vo. Bound in the original printed grey wrappers. Minor wear to extremities, otherwise a very nice and clean copy. 84 pp. (herein 3 plates included) + large folded unattached diagram. Original scarce printing of the engineering manual to the IBM 75, 80 and 82 Card Sorting Machine. In the 40ties and 50ties a major time consuming activity was sorting of information represented by punched cards. IBM was the leading manufacturer of the card sorting machine and the company was founded by Herman Hollerith on the basis of his 1901 Hollerith Automatic Horizontal Sorter. The two main requirements of the Card Sorting Machine were lowering of error risk and sorting speed. Both features were continuously improved which resulted in a number of different issue of the engineering manual."The three machines necessary to perform the basic operations required in punched card accounting are the punch, the sorter, and the accounting machine. The punch establishes the records, the sorter arranges or classifies them, and the accounting machine produces the printed reports." (From the introduction to the present manual). The 1957-manual gives a fascinating insight into how a fully development card sorting machine is developed and how it functioned.OOC 694. (the 1952-issue).

(Crookes).Sir William Crookes (1832-1919) studied at the Royal College of Chemistry , London, and served there as an assistant to Hoffmann. In 1859 he founded the Chemical News and remained its proprietor and editor until his death. he early attracted attentuion by his discovery of the element thallium by spectroscopic methods. he was an active investigator in many fields of physics and contributed greatly to the advance of knowledge by his study of the radiometer and of the electric discharge in rarefied gases. -(PMM: 386 describing J.J.
