Copenhagen: Informations Forlag, 1980. 4to. Original photoillustrated softcover as issued. 160 pages, illustrated throughout with high contrast black and white photographs by a large number of famous Danish photographers like Morten Bo, Henrik Saxgren and others. Not a very pretty copy: creased spine and discolorings to front cover edge (see photos), a contemporary bold gift inscription with red marker to inner cover. Else clean and overall a good, acceptable copy. First edition, 1st printing. "In late April 1980, the police first cleared the playground area Byggeren amid violent protests from residents and activists. This led to a time of unprecedented fighting between police and citizens in Nørrebro. Barricades were built on both Åboulevard and Nørrebrogade - and for several weeks the area was under a state of emergency. In 1980, Morten Langkilde was one of the younger members of Politiken's team of photographers and spent almost 24 hours in the conflict zone. "At the time, I had never seen anything like it. That kind of fighting. In Copenhagen. It was quite extreme," he says. Since then, the case of the Builder has often been called the start of the bz movement. At the time, the media was busy reporting that the fighting in Nørrebro was fought by 'spoilt leftists' and 'left-wing provocateurs'. But the truth was that it was the whole of Nørrebro that was fighting. Parents, educators, shopkeepers, even ordinary citizens. One was tired of the unplanned redevelopment and the decisions that were made. The actual fight took place around 1 May 1980. But in reality the fight already began on a Sunday in 1973, when a lorry drove into a building site. A very popular construction playground emerged. In June 1977, the municipality decided to close the six-year temporary institution in Todesgade. On 15 August 300 officers showed up. But they were stopped by 1,000 local residents. After several months of occupation, the residents reopened the institute. But on 10 January 1978 the police showed up even more numerous together with several craftsmen." (Luciano Zuccaccia)

Lawrence, Tim:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59699
Duke University Press, 2016. Thick and heavy paperback. XXI, 578 pages. Light shelfwear, else a clean and unread copy. "For the last 20 years London-based author and party organiser Tim Lawrence has dedicated himself to excavating the history of New York City party culture and bringing some of the most powerful aspects of that culture to London’s dance scene, from where it has ricocheted around the world. Having conducted the first set of major interviews with David Mancuso, Lawrence started to put on Loft-style Lucky Cloud Sound System parties with David and friends in London in June 2003. In early 2004 he published Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-79, which tracked the influence of the Loft on the wider New York DJ, dance and disco scene. In 2009 his biography of the iconic musician Arthur Russell became the first book to map the wider downtown music scene. These beautifully written and politically insightful histories have educated, inspired and celebrated the previously overlooked foundations of contemporary dance music. Lawrence’s most recent publication, Life & Death On The New York Dancefloor, 1980 – 1983, published in late 2016, shines a light on 'one of the most dynamic and creative periods in the history of New York City'. Falling between the more regularly celebrated sounds of disco, house and techno, the period produced a uniquely hybrid series of sounds that never acquired a settled name. This led them to be largely ignored by historians and even DJs, yet the power of the period’s music and the scenes it birthed, Lawrence argues, remains undeniable. Met with a rapturous response, Life and Death On The New York Dance Floor saw Lawrence on the road for most of the next year as he spread the word about the characters, the records, the clubs and the bands that shaped the post-Disco, post-Punk, and burgeoning Hip Hop landscapes of New York City during the early 1980s—a period when freedom still ruled."

Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59479
Primary Information, 2019. Small 8vo in wraps as issued. 575 pages. Light wear to cover. Essential writings from the downtown New York legend and polymath, pioneer of both structural film and drone musis. Tony Conrad (1940–2016) was a legendary multidisciplinary artist known for his groundbreaking contributions in experimental film, music, and video. Upon moving to New York City in 1962, he began making music with John Cale, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela in the Theatre of Eternal Music, a group that helped shape what would come to be known as minimalist music. He later went on to perform with Lou Reed in a pre-Velvet Underground band called The Primitives and cut a classic 1972 record with the German Krautrock band Faust that set a new standard for drone music. In the 1960s and 1970s, Conrad was perhaps best known for his contribution to film, where he helped to redefine structural filmmaking with The Flicker and Yellow Movies. Conrad went on to create an extensive body of work in a variety of media such as installation, photography, and performance until his death in 2016. Throughout his life, Conrad also wrote prolifically on topics including his own work (and that of his peers), music, art, media theory and activism. Writings is the first book devoted solely to Conrad's writing, collecting 57 hard-to-find or previously unpublished texts from 1961 to 2012. These writings provide a critical lens into the artist's multitudinous identities and wide-ranging creative pursuits and, as with his diverse artistic output, consistently challenge and dismantle authoritarian notions of culture.

Kirkegaards Antikvariat

University of Minnesota Press, 1971. Publishers hardcover, with fine jacket. IX, (1) 277 pp. Fine clean copy. First edition thus - uncommon. "For the last century and a half, Friedrich Schlegel (1772–1829) has enjoyed a reputation for being the critical grey eminence behind the coming to power of the Romantic Movement. It was Schlegel, in his three series of aphoristic fragments (Lyceum, Athenaeum, and Ideas), who actually first defined and employed the word "romantic" in the present sense; and it was he who in a chaotic, fragmentary, and often mysterious but forceful manner first proclaimed the doctrine that was to usher in the modern age in literature. He too was among the first to put his new program into practice in the shape of his unfinishedLucinde,a work variously denounced as pornography and heralded as a forerunner of modern novelistic experimentation, and probably the most famous novel to come out of German Romanticism. Both the Fragments and Lucinde, along with a brilliant tour de force, the "Essay on Incomprehensibility," are available now for the first time in a complete English translation in this volume, together with a brief scholarly introduction. This translation will enable non-German readers to examine at first hand the work of a man whom Rene Wellek has called "one of the greatest critics of history." ".
