New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1965. 8vo. Volume XLIV, Number 5, May-June 1965 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". Entire volume offered. In the original printed blue wrappers. With previous owner's name stamped to front wrapper. Sunning to spine and margins of front wrapper. An overall nice and clean copy. Pp. 871-898. [Entire volume: Pp. 731-935 + one folded diagram]. First publication of Sandberg's first paper on the properties of solutions of nonlinear functional equations in physical systems."With a few exceptions, however, the users of linear theory, when faced with the presence of a nonlinear element, were forced either to fall back on the classical technique of analyzing the stability of system only under small perturbations, or else to treat the nonlinearity itself as a small perturbation. In a SEMINAL SEQUENCE OF PAPERS beginning in 1963 [the present paper being the first publication], I. W. Sandberg at Bell Labs set forth a full analysis, not limited to small perturbations, of the stability of feedback systems containing nonlinear elements of a precisely specified kind." (Millman, S. A History of Engineering & Science in the Bell System, 1984, p. 31).

Regnault's paper: pp. 658-663. A few small inkspots on first page. Regnault announced here that he has found experimental evidence for the approximate nature of Dulong & Petit's Law for both elements and compounds."His first results on the specific heat of solids were presented to the Academy of Sciences on April 3, 1840. One finds there the first experimental demonstration of the approximate law of Dulong and Petit, which had been ypothesized, rather than established, by these physicists. For 24 pure elements, Regnault demonstrated that this law was only partially true mostly because there was no accepted table of atomic weights at that time." (Laurie Dahlberg)

The experiment goes under the above title.Garrison & Morton,608.

BARLOW, PETER. - THE "BARLOW LENS"
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44051
(London, Richard Taylor, 1833). First printing of the paper in which he describes the 8 inch-telescope with the fluid lens - the so-called second Barlow-lens - required by the Royal Society for testing."Barlow’s next major contribution makes his name still well known by amateur astronomers today. He invented the Barlow lens, a telescope lens consisting of a colourless liquid between two pieces of glass. The "Barlow lens", a modification of this telescope lens, is a negative achromatic combination of flint glass and crown glass. It is a negative lens used to extend the effective focal length of a telescope objective.""His optical experiments began about 1827. There were several experiments to correct a single lens for chromatic aberration with concave lenses. These correctors were first placed near the first lens, but some opticians moved the concave lens further down the tube. This arrangement was described 1828 by Rogers in a paper to the Astronomical Society. By this a 3 inch concave flint lens was sufficient to correct a 9 inch crown glass. Smaller lenses near the focus would do the colour correction, but have to have steeper curves which would introduce spherical aberration."

First appearance of a paper in which Joule measures connections between electrical currents and different kinds of magnets.Joule is well known for his discovery of Joule's Law, the connection between heat and mechanical work, where heat is a form of energy. "In December of 1840 he presented a paper to the Royal Society on the production of heat by the electric current. His course of thought led him to the consideration of the relatio between heat and and mechanical work. The results of his investigations were embodied in a series of papers which culminated in his great memoir on the mechanical equivalent of heat, published in 1850. Joule was one of the founders of the principle of the cosservation of energy. Some of his work was done in collaboration with Lord Kelvin."(Source Book in Physics p. 203).

Internally fine and clean. XIV, 166 pp. First printing of one of Popper's most influential works: "The Poverty of Historicism and The Open Society and Its Enemies, his most impassioned and brilliant social works, are as a consequence a powerful defence of democratic liberalism as a social and political philosophy, and a devastating critique of the principal philosophical presuppositions underpinning all forms of totalitarianism" (SEP)Popper argues, it is logically demonstrable by a consideration of the implications of the fact that no scientific predictor, human or otherwise, can possibly predict, by scientific methods, its own future results. From this it follows, he holds, that 'no society can predict, scientifically, its own future states of knowledge'(The present work, P vii)

(Paris, Bachelier, 1851). 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 33, No 22. Pp. (589-) 632 (entire issue offered). Talbot's paper: pp. 623-627. First printing of the paper in which Talbot describes how he worked out the method of instant photography. He patented it in 1852 and 1858. "The beginning of high speed photography might be considered to be William Henry Fox Talbot's experiment in 1851. He attached a page of the London Times newspaper to a wheel, which was rotated in front of his wet plate camera in a darkened room. As the wheel rotated, Talbot exposed a few square inches of the newspaper page for about 1/2000th of a second, using spark illumination from Leyden jars. This experiment resulted in a readable image."
