Serpentine Gallery and Koenig Books, London and New York, 2009. First edition. Hardcover. 95 pages. Exhibition catalog for a show that ran March 10 through April 19, 2009. Curated by Julia Peyton-Jones, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Kathryn Rattee. A hint of wear to top of spine else fine unread copy. Complete with obi. First edition. - The catalogue and monograph published on the occasion of the first major solo exhibition of Rebecca Warren’s work in the UK. Warren is known internationally for her exuberant, roughly-worked clay sculptures, bronzes and vitrines, containing carefully assembled objects collected by the artist. The show presented pieces from throughout Warren’s career and featured a selection of her best-known works, including the iconic Helmut Crumb (1998), The Mechanic (2000) and a selection of vitrines, alongside new work in steel made specifically for the exhibition. The artist engages with the history of figurative sculpture and her position within this predominantly male tradition. Warren’s shape-shifting sculptures in clay and bronze range from amorphous to more recognisable forms, which are sometimes sexually explicit, embracing both the formal and the grotesque. Warren says of her work: “Though my work evolves through a process of appropriation and reference, it is non-didactic, being closer to revelation and discovery.”

London: Everyman's Library 309, 2007. Publishers hardcover, w jacket. XXXIII, 787 pp. Fine clean and unread copy. "Flann O'Brien, was an Irish civil service official, novelist, playwright and satirist, now considered a major figure in twentieth-century Irish literature and a key figure in modernist and postmodern literature with novels, such as At Swim-Two-Birds and The Third Policeman. O'Brien's novels have attracted a wide following both for their unconventional humour and as prominent examples of modernist metafiction. As a novelist, O'Brien was influenced by James Joyce. He was nonetheless skeptical of the "cult" of Joyce, saying "I declare to God if I hear that name Joyce one more time I will surely froth at the gob".

University of Helsinki, Department of Anthropology 2002. 8vo in original wraps as issued. VI, 355 pages. With illustrations. Very good, well preserved copy. 1st edition. - " a study of religious knowledge and ritual practices among the Spiritual Baptists in Tobago. It explores the Spiritual Baptist belief system and religious practitioners' politics of self-definition and demarcation, and contrasts these to the ways religion and culture have been conceptualised in studies of AfroCaribbean religious syncretism. Creolisation is shown to spring from the cultural resourcefulness of Spiritual Baptists rather than simply from a synthesis of two or more "original" cultures. The inventiveness and indigenousness of the religion do not render it rootless, fragmented or teleologically constructed, however. An ethnographic analysis of the Spiritual Baptist cosmology and rituals demonstrates that the religion has a cohesive, if not bounded, structure, and that the cosmology is thoroughly rooted in the local world and materialised in bodily experiences and performances. The dynamic of structure and creativity, inherent to the religion, engenders the basic questions of the study." (diss.).

SMITHSON, Robert. - Shapiro, Gary:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir54364
University of California Press, 1995. Small hardcover, with dustjacket. XIV, 271 pp. Illustrated b/w. Fine copy. Publisher's note: 'Smithson's pioneering earthworks of the 1960s and 1970s anticipated contemporary concerns with environmentalism and the site-specific character of artistic production. His interrogation of authorship, the linear historiography of high modernism, and the limitations of the museum prefigures key themes in postmodern criticism while underscoring the uniqueness of Smithson's own work as an artist, filmmaker, and writer. Gary Shapiro's elegant and incisive study of Smithson's career is the first book to address the full range of the artist's dazzling virtuosity. Ranging from Smithson's best known works such as "Spiral Jetty" and "Partially Buried Woodshed" to his photographs, films, and theoretical readings and writings, Shapiro's masterful book analyzes Smithson's art in relation to the legacy of American art of the 1960s and central philosophical themes in its contemporary reception.'

GEYER, Andrea. - Berlo, Janet Catherine (introduction):
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir58560
London: Koenig Books 2008. Landscape format in stiff wraps as issued. 138 pages. Illustrated. Fine clean copy. Andrea Geyer?s work Spiral Lands / Chapter 1 was presented at documenta 12. Spiral Lands represents with panoramic landscape photographs Geyer?s view on southwestern North America and focuses on a long lasting fight about social justice in America; the condemnation of the narrative Americans, the fight for their rights and the return of their land. Geyer?s photographs express her desire for justice. Combining the photographs with diary notes, scientific, philosophical or contract texts Geyer interrupts the idyllic seemingly landscapes: "Geyer's Spiral Lands is a work of photographic and textual historiography that investigates the longest struggle for social justice in North America today — the dispossession of lands from American Indians by colonization, governmentality, capitalist development, and flat out force and violence. These claims for spatial justice are deeply temporal — legislation from Europe around the "Doctrine of Discovery" and "the Rights of Conquest" were written in 1493 and law suits initiated by native groups to uphold treaty rights and gain land claims have spanned most of the 20th century to today — and Spiral Lands sculpts a complex understanding of the dynamic of history, place, ownership, capitalism, vision and photography to explore how North America is literally a contested zone that has yet to reconcile its own history and its heroic narratives of conquest as a capitalist myth of origins. Foraging through the archive of colonial proclamations, treaties, manifestos from the American Indian Movement (AIM), anthropological texts, personal histories, corporate reports, travelogues and oral histories, Geyer shows this relationship of land and ownership, of space and history, to be the very condition of the global present rather than a repressed history that can be brought into view by adding it to existing historical narratives. The landscape photographs of contested sites of Native lands challenge the historical scopic regimes of North American landscape photography and counter a photography of a spirit of place (genius loci) with the representation of place as process that is dynamically historical, intensely present and visually uncanny. The heart of this work is a radical beauty of a cultural politics based not on cultural recognition and liberalism, but on social justice" (Jeff Derksen).

kir52781
Les Presses du Reel, 2009. Squarish 8vo in wraps as issed. 318 pages, richly ilustrated with text in French and English. Fine clean copy. 1st edition. - The first monograph on the multiple activities of the artist / musician / performer, with numerous illustrations, texts, and an audio CD. - on the artist, musician, performer, organizer, attempting to disclose the complex articulations between multiples activities and to introduce sound and contextual art problematic. The texts present various approaches and activities of Paul Panhuysen, a general introduction, archives, music installations, paintings, in situ installations, games, Het Apolohuis activities and theoretical positions. The pictures illustrate differents projects of Panhuysen's work (in situ installations, technical plan, exhibitions views), collected in different classifications: sound installation with long fine wire, installation with bird, game, painting... and the graphic design couch with diffent color and form. The audio CD Small Samples, Many Pieces is made up of small samples and a variety of sound art works. It presents sounds produced by musicians, animals and objects, composed music and improvisations, acoustical, amplified and electronic sounds. There are pieces based on calculus, but on intuition as well. In many works image and sound go together. This multitude and variety of impulses are typical for the artist Paul Panhuysen. "A beautiful looking and sounding survey of a key European art and music figure." Alan Licht, The Wire. - Artist, musician, performer, organizer, Paul Panhuysen (1934, Borgharen – 2015), after having studied painting and monumental design at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, and art sociology at the University of Utrecht, was, successively, the director of the Fine Arts Academy in Leeuwarden, and a curator and head of education and public relations for the Den Haag City Museum and for the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven. In addition, he continued to paint and make collages. In 1965 he founded the artist group “De Bende van de Blauwe Hand.” This group, which was closely related to Fluxus, presented exhibitions, environments and happenings in museums and galleries. Starting in 1965, he presented “situations” meant to involve the audience, and in 1968, he started the Maciunas Quartet, who are still making experimental music as the Maciunas Ensemble. In the early seventies, Panhuysen worked as an advisory artist with urban development teams (o.a. in Zoetermeer, Lunetten, Maaspoort) and developed systematic ordering systems and mathematical series that he has continued to use in his work as an artist. In addition, Panhuysen's work shows a predilection for found objects and the element of chance. To an increasing degree, Panhuysen has been concentrating on sound art, which has come to occupy an important place in his visual art work. He has presented his Long String Installations, which are played in concerts personally and in exhibitions as automats, worldwide in festivals since 1982 . These installations are set-up in indoor or outdoor spaces for anywhere from 1 to 40 days, using specific properties and architectural prospects of the location. Since 1989 Panhuysen developped artworks in which he confronts the audience with the creativity, intelligence and communicational skills of animals, especially of birds. In 1980, Panhuysen founded Het Apollohuis, and since then till 1997, he has been the director of this internationally oriented podium where artists from divergent disciplines did present their work. In 1996 he received the Cultural Award of Noord-Brabant and in1998 he became Companion of the Order of the Dutch Lion. In 2004 Panhuysen received in the category Digital Musics from PrixArs Electronica an Honory Mention for the composition A Magic Square of 5 to Look at / A Magic Square of 5 to Listen to. Edited by Yvan Etienne. Texts by Paul Panhuysen, Jaap Bremer, Yvan Etienne, Michel Giroud, Rahma Khazam, Paul Kuypers, Helga de la Motte-Haber, Rene van Peer, Rolf Sachsse, Louis Ucciani.

DION, MARK. - Verena Gamper & Dieter Buchhart: (ed.):
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir52404
Published by Hatje Cantz, 2008. Large 8vo in hardcover, no jacket as issued. 164 pages, richly illustrated. Text in both English and German. Fine clean copy. 1st edition. "For over twenty years, the repertoire of American artist Mark Dion (*1961 in New Bedford, Massachusetts) has included staged workbenches, dusty storage vaults, stuffed bears, and tarred birds. Ostensibly, his installations, interventions, performances, and photographs critique humankind’s often cruel treatment of nature. However, the artist also demonstrates that “nature” is a mere construct that is constantly being reshaped and reinterpreted. Dion’s current project, Concerning Hunting, examines hunting as a traditional, but controversial, cultural practice. One of the fascinating things about hunting is its fundamental contradictoriness: the sensitivity of the hunter and his profound knowledge about what nature requires are also expressed through the act of killing animals. Dion’s artistic examinations do not focus on nature as such, but rather on the hunt as a way culture deals with it."

Ganahl, Rainer (ed.):
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir52774
Semiotext (e), 1998. Paperback as issued. 413 pages. Light edgewear. A clean copy. From 1993-96, artist Rainer Ganahl held six reading seminars with six different bibliographies in six different countries and entitled this public project; "IMPORTED—A READING SEMINAR, Or How to Reinvent the Coffee Table: 25 Books for Instant Use (7 Different National Versions).” Imported – A Reading Seminar is an extension of that project and gathers together a collection of texts with the common theme of import. For this volume, Ganahl invited a series of authors who have an intimate relation with each country he visited to contribute texts or interviews addressing the consequences of (cultural) exchange, globalization, nationalism, multinationalism, Orientalism, Eurocentrism, tourism, languages, theory, desires, identity, and politics from a variety of perspectives. The interview between Kojin Karatani and Sabu Kohso, included in this volume, addresses important economical and political aspects along with its instrumentality in the construction of nations and of race consciousness; Bill Arning's text demonstrates how the author came to understand through his experience as a curator that sexuality always has a specific cultural context; Coco Fusco deals with issues of prostitution in socialist countries now in the process of transition to capitalism; dealing with displacement of collective identities and their representation, Sami Naïr asks the question: What is it to be Arab? And Sylvere Lotringer: How can one become a foreigner in a foreign country. The resulting volume includes texts in English, Japanese, Russian, German, and French by nineteen different authors. Knowledge of a foreign language helps, but is not necessary. Along with those already mentioned included are texts by Julia Kristeva, Gayatri Spivak, Edward Said, Zeigam Azizov, Lisa Adkins, Dan Bacalzo, Benjamin Buchloh, Karen Kelsky, Dana Leonard, Edward Soja, Victor Tupitsyn, Wulf Schmidt-Wulfen.
