Den sjældne originaludgave af Zeuthens magisterafhandling (det, der senere kaldes doktorgraden), i hvilken han som en af de første i Danmark opponerer mod Hegel og lægger sig ud med Heiberg.I sin hér berømte afhandling for den filosofiske magistergrad anklager Zeuthen Hegel og hegelianismen (med Heiberg i spidsen herhjemme) for at lade tænkningen være filosofiens eneste redskab og for ikke at tage udgangspunkt i religionen, hvis begreber, trossandheder og overensstemmelse med andre former for viden han anså for filosofiens sande opgave at undersøge. Afhandlingen affødte en skarp kritik fra Heiberg, som affejede Zeuthens indvendinger og fraskrev ham hans filosofiske evner og viden. Ikke desto mindre kom Zeuthens tidlige indvendinger med Hegel til at spille en stor rolle i udviklingen af den danske anti-Hegelianisme.

Zeeman's paper: pp. 1444-1445. First French version of this importent paper in which Zeeman observed for the first time the splitting of the spectral lines into doublets and triplets. Here we have the first appearance of a charged particle much lighter than an atom, the first glimpse at the electron."In the spring of 1897, after his move to the University of Amsterdam, Zeeman resolved a magnetically "broadened" spectral line into the triplet of distinct polarized components that the Lorentz theory predicted for a sufficiently intense magnetic field. This in a very real sense was the peak of the Zeeman-Lorentz investigation of the Zeeman effect."(DSB).

First appearance of Crooke's statement that radioactivity seems to violate the principle of the conservation of energy."Despite his speculative powers, Crookes at first took a conservative view of this new science, for he could not believe that radioactive elements decayed spontaneously, since this seemed to imply a violation of the conservation of energy. It was his view, expressed between 1898 and 1900, that the source of activity was external to the radioactive element. He imagined that radium, say, had the ability to act as a Maxwellian demon and select from the atmosphere those air particles which were moving more swiftly than the average, absorb some of their energy, and eject them at a lower speed. This theory, which never received full publication, contravened the second law of thermodynamics; and although Crookes thought that he might have experimental support for it, his evidence did not measure up to the critical scrutiny of Stokes." Fuchs established that the equation with fixed branch points can be made into a Riccati equation if its genus - the genus of the corresponding Riemann surface - with respect to u and du/dz is zero and can be integrated using elliptic functions if the genus is 1.

First printing of Neumann's important formulation and proof of an ergodic theorem for quantum systems."The basic principle of this work is to define quantum analogues of cells in phase space by considering sets of quantum states for which all macroscopic quantities have given values within a certain inaccuracy. One further considers the unitary transformation u relating these quantum states to the eigenstates of the hamiltonian. The ergodicity is then established for "almost every" value of the transformation u. Although the latter restriction is a rather unsatisfactory one from the physical standpoint, one must consider von Neumann's ergodic theorem as one of the very few important contributions to a most difficult subject which even now is far from complete clarification." A very nice and clean copy with almost no markings . 141, (3) pp. First edition (43e mille, on back wrapper), the regular issue (not one of the 500 numbered copies) of the second of Sartre's two main philosophical works, which have both influenced 20th century philosophy greatly, and contributed immensely to the development of existentialism in general. "Existentialism is a Humanism" became one of Sartre's most widely read and most criticized works, and it caused great controversies and uproar at the time of its appearance; -as opposed to his "L'Être et le Néant", all of Sartre's critics actually read this work, and so did huge parts of the population, causing the book to appear in huge numbers after the publication of the first edition.The work is the literary re-working of an exposition given by Sartre at a conference in October 1945, where he caused a scandalous discussion, which among other things led to the fact that all references to the existentialist T.E. Lawrence were omitted from the work when it appeared in print. "Cette conférence marqua une date dans l'histoire anecdotique de l'existemtialisme..." (Contat & Rybalka p. 131)."L'Existentialisme est un Humanisme" fut l'un des ouvrages les plus lus et les plus critiqués de Sartre et suscita de considérables malentendus. Comme l'a bien vu M.-A. Sartre himself also disowned great parts of this work, which makes it all the more interesting, since it is the only one of his works of which he has done so. The work was reprinted numerous times during the first years, and the first edition (on vellum-paper) is very difficult to come by.
