First printing of Eller's most importent chemical works."A really importent investigation is Eller's on the soluability of salts in water. He found that most salts cause a fall in temperature when dissolved in water, but some...cause a rise in temperature....He discusses the theory of solution - the interpostion of salt particles between water particles, attraction, etc..."(Partington II, pp. 716-17).When Frederick the Great became king in 1740, he made Eller his personal physician and appointed him director of the Berlin Academy of Sciences. Eller’s wife died in 1751, and in 1753 he married Henrietta Catherine Rosen. In 1755 Frederick made Eller a privy councillor, a position he held until his death. Eller held the highest positions in Prussia, professor of anatomy, dean to the Collegium Medico-Chirurgicum, director of the Berlin Academy of Sciences and physician-in-ordinary to Frederick the Great. Together with Georg Ernst Stahl he was responsible for laying the foundation for all subsequent developments in medical services in Prussia.

VON NEUMANN, JOHANN.

lyn49013
Berlin, Springer, 1929. 8vo. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", bd. 57, 1929. Entire issue offered. Library stamp to front free end-paper, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 30-70. [Entire volume:VII, (1), 872 pp.]. First printing of Neumann's important formulation and proof of an ergodic theorem for quantum systems."The basic principle of this work is to define quantum analogues of cells in phase space by considering sets of quantum states for which all macroscopic quantities have given values within a certain inaccuracy. One further considers the unitary transformation u relating these quantum states to the eigenstates of the hamiltonian. The ergodicity is then established for "almost every" value of the transformation u. Although the latter restriction is a rather unsatisfactory one from the physical standpoint, one must consider von Neumann's ergodic theorem as one of the very few important contributions to a most difficult subject which even now is far from complete clarification." (Hove, Von Neumann's Contributions to Quantum Theory, p. 98).

Berlin, Julius Springer, 1923. 8vo. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering. In "Zeitschrift für Physik" Bd. 20, 1923. Entire issue offered. Stamp to front free end paper, otherwise a fine and clean copy. Pp. 237-255. [Entire volume: V, (1) 426 pp.]. First appearance of Bothe's early paper on the Compton effect which, together with his later paper (in Bd 32, Zeitschrift für Physik), awarded him the Nobel Prize in Physics "for the coincidence method and his discoveries made therewith"."Among the topics that Bothe studied in 1924 was the ejection of electrons by X rays, and it was in connection with this phenomenon that he and Geiger performed an important experiment. In an effort to reconcile the particulate and wavelike properties of radiation, Bohr, Kramers, and Slater in 1924 formulated a new quantum theory of radiation. According to their hypothesis, momentum and energy-are conserved only statistically in interactions between radiation and matter. Bothe and Geiger suggested that this could be tested experimentally by examining individual Compton collisions. Bothe introduced a modification into the Geiger counter that made it appropriate for use in coincidence experiments (a very novel procedure in 1924). Using two counters, they studied the coincidences between the scattered X ray and the recoiling electron. Correlating photons with electrons, Bothe and Geiger found a coincidence rate of one in eleven; since the chance coincidence rate for the situation was 10?5, the experimental results contradicted the theoretical predictions and indicated small-scale conservation of energy and momentum."
