[No place], The Journal of Symbolic Logic, 1967. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. In "Journal of Symbolic Logic", Vol. 32, Number 3. September, 1967. A very fine and clean copy. Pp. 355-65 [Entire issue: Pp. 289-446, (2)]. First printing of Pollock's important paper, in which he created a system that brought together iteration of modalities, already ontic and still more deontic. At the mere age of 27, John Pollock published the present "Basic Modal Logic", in which he claims that: "if we try to construct a theory of modal logic in which there are no iterated modalities, we can avoid most of the controversy and still have a theory that is strong enough for all of the normal uses to which modal logic is put." This theory presents an approach to how modal distinctions can be incorporated into logic.

Edinburgh, Thomas Nelson & Sons, 1955. 8vo. In contemporary red stiff cardboards. In "Mind", Vol. LXIV. Fine and clean. Pp. 200-12. [Entire volume: VII, (1), 576, (7) pp.]. First printing of Mackie famous paper on the philosophical statement of the problem of evil. For centuries, atheists argued that an all-loving, all-powerful God is logically incompatible with the existence of evil, and thus the existence of evil provided a knock-down argument against God. The standard form of this argument was provided by J.L. Mackie in the present paper.

Tübingen, Max Niemeyer, 1962. 8vo. Orig. full brown cloth, original dust-jacket. A few tears to top of d-j., otherwise an excellent copy. Bdg. and internally near mint. VII, (1), 189 pp. First edition of Heidegger's important interpretation of Kant's "System aller Grundsätze des reinen Verstandes" from "Kritik der Reinen Vernunft". The work is founded on the basis of a lecture-course given by Heidegger in Freiburg in 1935-36 under the title of "Grundfragen der Metaphysik"; the work is translated into English as ""What is a Thing?" and constitutes an in part revision of the notions put forth in his "Kant und das Problem der Metaphysik"."Aus dem Umkreis der Grundfragen der Metaphysik stellen wir in dieser Vorlesung EINE Frage auf. Sie Lautet: "Was ist ein Ding?" Die Frage ist schon alt. Das stets Neue an ihr ist nur, dass sie immer wieder gefragt warden muss." (p.1).As much as this is an interpretation of Kant's notion of "thing", it equally presents us with Heidegger's own philosophy on this metaphysical question.

lyn52193
Paris, A. Sirou, 1845. Nice contemp. full embossed cloth. Gilt spine. Stamps on title-page. A paperlabel pasted on upper part of spine. Lithographed frontispiece with handcolouring. (6),107 pp. Internally clean and fine, printed on good paper (papier vélin). First edition describing the French optical telegraph system, the mechanical and optical telegraph system developed by Ennemond Gonon. This system was described by Gonon as a new telegraph for day and night, universal and perpetual, and for all languages. Mechanical-optical telegraphy had been invented by French engineer Claude Chappe in the 1790s. Gonon's system was intended to improve on Chappe's, but the rise of the electric telegraph developed by Morse in the 1840s, meant Gonon's system was never built.
