(London, Harrison and Sons, 1881). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1881, Vol. 172 - Part II. Pp. 491-535 a. 3 plates. First appearance of a classic paper on "cosmological" tidal friction and effects."Following his accession to the Plumian chair Darwin delved even more deeply into the problems of the origin and evolution of the solar system, making numerous investigations of the figures of equilibrium of rotating masses of fluid and, later, making extensive studies of periodic orbits in the restricted problem of three bodies, carried out with special reference to cases obtaining for the particular values of mass ratio of the twofinite bodies of 1:10 and 1:1048 (the later approximating the mass ration of Jupiter to that of the sun)."(DSB III, p. 583)."Darwin's most significant contribution to the history of science lies in his pioneering work in the application of detailled dynamical analysis to cosmological and geological problems. That many of his conclusions are now out of date should in no way diminish the historical interest in his experiments, nor the importent service thet he rendered cosmogony by the example he gave of putting various hypotheses to the test of actual calculations. Darwin's method remains a milestone in the development of cosmogony, and subsequent investigators have favored it over the merely qualitative arguments prevalent until that time."(DSB III, p. 583).

Titriermethode was the first successful compendium in this new field of analytical chemistry; It went through eight new editions between 1856 and 1913 and was translated into several languages. Mohr invented many new titration procedures and examined and often improved most of the older ones. Many methods and designs of apparatus bear his name: the Mohr test for iron and chloride determination, the Mohr pinchcock burette, the Mohr balance for the determination of specific gravity, and Mohr’s salt (ferrous ammonium sulfate) are evidence of his skill in the laboratory. The cooling device generally called the Liebig reflux and the useful cork borer were also invented by Mohr." (DSB).

lyn42439
(London, Taylor & Francis, 1865). Large 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London.", Vol. 155 - Part I. Pp. 71-202 and 1 lithographed plate. Clean and fine. First printing. A major paper in physical chemistry, of which he may in some respects be regarded as the founder. Kopp's fame rests mainly, apart from the results presented here on physical chemistry, on his writings dealing with the history of chemistry."In 1864 Kopp undertook the study of specific heats of a large number of elements and compounds, in an attempt to verify Neumann's law that the product of molecular weight and specific heat is a constant, regardless of the nature of the substance (in the paper offered). He found that in fact the relation was much more complicated and involved a large number of factors. He was, however, able to show that each element has the same specific heat in its free solid state as in its solid compounds. The specific heas of compounds could be calculated from those of their elements" (DSB).
