DEBYE, PETER. - THE DEBYE MODEL.

lyn49780
(Leipzig, Barth), 1912. No wrappers. In: "Annalen der Phsyik", 4th series, vol. 39, No. 14. Pp. 705-896 (entire issue offered). debye's paper: pp. 789-839. Clean and fine. First edition"In his second outstanding paper (the offered item) Debye treated a solid as a system of vibrating atoms and modified Einstein's theory of specific heats, which had been only partially successful. He showed that the solid could be characterized by a complete spectrum of eigen-frequencies and that the specific heat of a monatomic solid was a universal function of the ratio theta/T, were theta is a tempature characteristic of the particular solid and T is the absolute tempature. Now commonly called the Debye temperature, theta could be calculated from the elastic constants of the solid. The Debye equation, involving the then recently developed quantum theory, gave agreement with observed specific heat values. Aside from a numerical factor, it differed from the Einstein equation in containg both the compressibility and and Poisson's ratio." - Dictionary of Scientific Biography, volume 3, p.619.

HERSCHEL, WILLIAM. - INVESTIGATING NEWTON'S RINGS.

lyn42916
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1807 a. 1809). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1807 - Part I. Pp. 180-233 a. 1 engraved plate., pp. 259-302 a. 3 large folded engraved plates. First appearance of the 2 first papers in which Herschel tried to establish his own theory of light."In a less happy venture into the physics of light, Herschel devoted three papers (1807-1810)- the two first offred here - to investigating the cause of colored concentric rings ("Newton's rings"). Ignoring the explanation already given by Thomas Young wherby the rings result from interference between light waves, Herschel ceriticized Newton' theory and attempted one of his own. he brought down on his head a storm of criticism, and this may have been a cause of his poor health at this period."(DSB VI, p.333).

TINSEAU (D'AMONDANS, CHARLES de). - GENERALIZATION OF THE PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44931
(Paris, Moutard, Panckoucke, 1780). 4to. Extract from "Mémoires fe Mathematique et de Physique, Présentés à l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans", Tome IX. Pp. 593-624 and 2 folded engraved plates. Clean and fine. First appearance of an importent papwer in the history of analytic geometry."In this article Tinseau gave an interesting generalization of the Pythagorean theorem for space of three dimensions: the square of the area of a plane surface is equal to the sum of the squares of the projection of this surface upon three mutually perpendicular coordinate planes....To Tinseau it appears that the use of the word "conoid" in the modern sense is due."(Boyer "History of Analytic Geometry, p. 207)."Two of the three memoirs that constitute Tinseau’s oeuvre deal with topics in the theory of surfaces and curves of double curvature: planes tangent to a surface, contact curves of circumscribed cones or cylinders, various surfaces attached to a space curve, the determination of the osculatory plane at a point of a space curve, problems of quadrature and cubature involving ruled surfaces, the study of the properties of certain special ruled surfaces (particularly conoids), and various results in the analytic geometry of space. In these two papers the equation of the tangent plane at a point of a surface was first worked out in detail (the equation had been known since Parent), methods of descriptive geometry were used in determining the perpendicular common to two straight lines in space, and the Pythagorean theorem was generalized to space (the square of a plane area is equal to the sum of the squares of the projections of this area on mutually perpendicular planes). (DSB). Although Tinseau published very little, his papers are of great interest as additions to Monge’s earliest works. Indeed, Tinseau appears to have been Monge’s first disciple.

SAVART, FELIX - A MAIN WORK ON ACOUSTICS

(Paris, Fortin, Masson et Cie, 1840). 8vo. Without wrappers. In: 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique', 2e Series, tome 73, Cahier 3. Pp. 225-336 (entire issue offered). Savart's paper: pp. 225-273 and 2 large folded engraved plates, showing 110 vibration patterns. Some browning to first and last leaf. Scattered brownspots. First printing of Savart's importent paper on the vibration of plates in which he greatly extended the investigations done by Chladni. The paper is an abstract, but was not published otherwise.Savart made experimental studies of many phenomena involving vibration. With Biot he showed that the magnetic field produced by the current in a long, straight wire is inversely proportional to the distance from the wire. In most of his vibrational studies Savart observed the nodal lines of vibrating surfaces and solids, and he thereby obtained information on vibrational modes and elastic properties. He also greatly extended Chladni's observations of the modes of plates: adding a dye to the sand, he made prints of the nodal patterns for brass plates in the shapes of circles, ellipses, and polygons. Savart was able to locate directly the nodes of a vibrating air column by lowering a light membrane covered with sand into a vertical pipe.

The plate somewhat soiled and with a dampstain.Otherwise clean and fine. First appearance of this joint paper in which further thermodynamical connections are published.Joule is well known for his discovery of Joule's Law, the connection between heat and mechanical work, where heat is a form of energy. "In December of 1840 he presented a paper to the Royal Society on the production of heat by the electric current. His course of thought led him to the consideration of the relatio between heat and and mechanical work. The results of his investigations were embodied in a series of papers which culminated in his great memoir on the mechanical equivalent of heat, published in 1850. Joule was one of the founders of the principle of the cosservation of energy. Some of his work was done in collaboration with Lord Kelvin."(Source Book in Physics p. 203).
