First appearance of Lord Kelvin's most importent paper on magnetism."In Paris, Joseph Liouville (1809-1882) encouraged Thomson's professional interest in Michael Faraday, whom Thomson knew and interacted with in London, by suggesting that the reconciliation of Faraday's electrostatic experimental results and the views of the French mathematicians, Ampère, Coulomb, Poisson, etc., could be a fertile field of mathematical endeavor. Intrigued by Liouville's suggestion Thomson wrote several papers over the next few years based on Faraday's experimental results, including: On a Mechanical Representation of Electric, Magnetic and Galvanic Forces (1847). On the Mathematical Theory of Electricity (1848). On the Mathematical Theory of Magnetism (1851). (The paper offered).After receiving Maxwell's request for guidance, Thomson shared with him the challenge presented by interpreting Faraday's written experimental results using mathematical formalism. The offprint-form."In his dissertation Strömgren derived the definitive orbit of Comet 1890 II, which, like most comets followed an approxiately parabolic form.This invstigation was the first of a series of papers on the original orbits of such comets - open or closed - and was a crucial work on the cosmogeny of comets. In "Ueber den Ursprung der Kometen" (the item offered), Strömgren concluded that all comets of which the orbits had been determined with sufficient accuracy for a decision about their return to be possible, have followed closed orbits.....about 30 years later his investigations formed the starting point for J.H. Oort's and A.J.J. van Woerkom's "discovwery" of the comet cloud far outside the planetary orbits."(DSB)

First appearance in English of a classic paper in the investigations of chemical reactions produced by lightrays. Their joined work - from 1855-59 - founded scientific photochemistry, by determining the phenomena of induction, deduction and extinction. They found that the beginning of light reaction takes place at first very slowly and that the velocity increases gradually until it attains a constant value, observing also that steam accelerates the action and that air retards it. They also gave proofs of the "Law of Reciprocity
