(London, Richard Taylor, 1851). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1851 - Part I. Pp. 247-268 a. pp. 269-285. First appearance of Lord Kelvin's most importent paper on magnetism."In Paris, Joseph Liouville (1809-1882) encouraged Thomson's professional interest in Michael Faraday, whom Thomson knew and interacted with in London, by suggesting that the reconciliation of Faraday's electrostatic experimental results and the views of the French mathematicians, Ampère, Coulomb, Poisson, etc., could be a fertile field of mathematical endeavor. Intrigued by Liouville's suggestion Thomson wrote several papers over the next few years based on Faraday's experimental results, including: On a Mechanical Representation of Electric, Magnetic and Galvanic Forces (1847). On the Mathematical Theory of Electricity (1848). On the Mathematical Theory of Magnetism (1851). (The paper offered). After receiving Maxwell's request for guidance, Thomson shared with him the challenge presented by interpreting Faraday's written experimental results using mathematical formalism. Faraday's work on electricity and magnetism intrigued Maxwell and he began his research by reading Thomson's papers on the subject."(Alan T. Williams).

STAS, J.S. (JEAN-SERVAIS). - ATOMIC WEIGHTS OF THE ELEMENTS ARE INCOMMENSURABLE.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn45026
Paris, Victor Masson et Fils, 1866. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf, raised bands, gilt spine. Light wear along edges. Wear to top of spine. Small stamps on verso of titlepage. In "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 4ieme Series - Tome IX. 528 pp., 2 folded plates. (The entire volume offered). Stas' paper: pp. 215-243. Internally clean and fine. First French printing of Stas's importent (first) paper in which he demonstrates the incommensurability of the atomic weights, proving that atomic weights are not whole numbers or multiples of halv or a quarter of the atomic weight of hydrogen."Stas demonstrated that the values of the atomic weights he had determined were neither multiples of unity, nor of one half, as Marignac believed, nor of one quarter, as Dumas maintained. This publication led Marignac to doubt the universality of the law of definite proportions. In three papers collectively entitled "Nouvelles recherches sur les lois des proportions chimiques, sur les poids atomiques et leurs rapports mutuels" (1865), Stas presented the results of an extensive series of experiments devoted to the new demonstration. By painstaking and accurate measurements he established that atomic weights were incommensurable, thereby disproving the facile conclusion that discrepancies with whole-number values were due merely to experimental errors. Prout’s hypothesis was thus discredited."(DSB).

GRIGNARD, (FRANCOIS AUGUSTE VICTOR). - DISCOVERY OF THE GRIGNARD REACTION.

lyn47268
(Paris, Gauthier-Villars), 1900. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 130, No 20. Pp. (1285-) 1344. (Entire issue offered). Grignard's paper: pp. 1322-24. One leaf repaired in upper margin affecting the text on verso (but without loss of letters). Light browning, poor paperquality. First apperance of an importent paper in which Grignard revealed the "Grignard Reagent", an important means of preparing organic compounds from smaller precursor molecules. For this work, Grignard was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1912 jointly with fellow Frenchman Paul Sabatier."A large number of general synthetic methods had been developed by the end of the nineteenth century. However, one of the most versatile and importent was first described as the new century opened. This was the Grignard synthesis." (Leicester "A Source book in Chemistry 1900-1950", where this paper is translated "Some New Organometallic Compounds of Magnesium and Their Application to the Synthesis ofAlchohols and Hydrocarbons")."Grignard treated magnesium turnings in anhydrous ether with methyl iodide at room temperature, preparing what came to be known as the Grignard reagent, which could be used for reaction with a ketone or an aldehyde without first being isolated. On hydrolyzing with dilute acid, the corresponding tertiary or secondary alcohol was produced in much better yield than Barbier had been able to obtain. Grignard’s discovery was reported in a short paper at a meeting of the Académie des Sciences in May 1900 (the paper offered)." (DSB).
