Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth, 1910. 8vo. In full black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Annalen der Physik", Vierte Folge, Band 32. Entire volume offered. Library labels to front end papers and stamp to title page, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 749-76. [Entire volume: VIII, 1112 pp. + 15 plates.]. First appearance of Sommerfeld's important response to Minkowski famous 1908 lecture in which he argued famously in Cologne that certain circumstances required scientists to discard the view of physical space as a Euclidean three-space, in favor of a four-dimensional world with a geometry characterized by the invariance of a certain quadratic form. "Sommerfeld insisted upon the simpli?cation a?orded to calculation by the adoption of a spacetime approach, and left aside Minkowski's philosophical interpretation of spacetime, with one exception. In the introduction to his 1910 reformulation of Minkowski's matrix calculus, Sommerfeld echoed Minkowski's belief that absolute space should vanish from physics, to be replaced by the "absolute world" of Minkowski spacetime [10, p. 749]. This exchange of absolutes, Euclidean 3-space for Minkowski spacetime, was clearly designed to calm physicists shocked by Minkowski's high-handed dismissal of Euclidean space as the frame adequate for understanding physical phenomena." (New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1951). 8vo. Volume XXX, 1951 of The Bell System Technical Journal. Bound without the general title-page in a nice full green cloth. Library stamp to front free end-paper and first page of tables of contents. Very minor bumping to extremities. A tight and clean copy. Pp. 50-64. [Entire volume: 32, 1255 pp). First edition of Shannon's famous article in which he measures the entropy rate of English text to be between 1.0 and 1.5 bits per letter, or as low as 0.6 to 1.3 bits per letter."A new method of estimating the entropy and redundancy of a language is described. This method exploits the knowledge of the language statistics possessed by those who speak the language, and depends on experimental results in prediction of the next letter when the preceding text is known. Results of experiments in prediction are given, and some properties of an ideal predictor are developed." (From the introduction to the present article)."Natural languages are highly redundant; the number of intelligible fifty-letter English sentences is many fewer than 26*50, and the number of distinguishable ten-second phone conversations is far smaller than the number of sound signals that could be generated with frequencies up to 20.000 Hz. This immediately suggests a theory for signal compression. If you can recode the alphabet so that common sequences of letters and abbreviated, while infrequent combinations are spelled out in lengthy fashion, you can dramatically reduce the channel capacity needed to send the data." (Sethna, Statistical Mechanics: Entropy, Order Parameters and Complexity, Oxford University Press, 2006, pp. 100).

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1927. Lex8vo. Volume VI, July, No. 3, 1927 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". In the original printed blue wrappers. A bit of browning to spine and extremities, but overall fine. Internally very nice and clean. Pp. 461-494. [Entire issue: Pp. 375-550]. First publication of Molina's fundamental discussion on the problems concerning telephone trunking problems. "If telephone plants were provided in such quantities that when a subscriber makes a call there would be immediately available such switching arrangements and such trunks or paths to the desired point as may be necessary to establish the connection instantly, it would require that path and switching facilities be provided to meet the maximum demand occurring at any time, with the result that there would be a large amount of plant not in use most of the time." (From the introduction to the present paper)."Edward C. Molina, a self-taught researcher, made seminal contributions to telephone traffic theory. [...] There were early attempts to use probability theory for the analysis of exchange" (Gass, An annotated timeline of operations research, 2005, p. 35.). His 1928 book on congestion theory became the classic text on the subject. The present paper anticipates many of the themes and problems presented in that book.Other papers of interest contained in the present issue:1. Ferguson, J.G. FICHTE, JOHANN GOTTLIEB. - A MAIN WORK OF GERMAN IDEALISM.

lyn49841
Jena u. Leipzig, bei Christian Ernst Gabler, 1798. 8vo. Recent hcalf. Gilt spine and with gilt lettering. (2),494 pp. The "Vorwort" lacking. A few underlining, otherwise fine. First edition of one of Fichte's most important works, the "System of Ethics" (or "System of a Theory of Morals"), which constitutes the second of his two main practical works. With this work the foundation of the practical side of Fichte's system is laid, and it represents one of the cornerstones of German idealism. (See PMM 224). "If Kant had opened up the path which German, and indeed all, philosophy was to take in the nineteenth century, the credit for the complete description of its subject-matter belongs to Fichte." (PMM 244, p. 148).Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814) was of one of the founding thinkers of German idealism. He is considered a very important philosopher in at least two respects: 1) as the uniter of the ideas of the two great - Kant and Hegel -, and as an important philosopher in himself, who has contributed originally to the philosophy of the self. By some he is considered the father of German nationalism.
