First printing of perhaps Humboldt's most importent paper in chemistry."In fact, immediately following this clash (the clash with Fourcroy over the vitalistic principle in organic chemistry, where Fourcroy considered "that Mr. Humboldt proceed to quickly in his explanations"), Humboldt went to Vauquelin and Fourcroy's laboratories in Paris where he sought to gain experience on the new French methodology. Thanks to this training, Humboldt wrote a memoir on the earth's absorption of oxygen that was soon to become famous (the paper offered). Lower margin (with the previous owner's name) cut out, not affecting text, otherwise internally nice and clean. "One of the first mathematicians who reacted to Lie's newly introduced concept was Kasimir Zorawaski, a polish scientist who worked in Warsaw. As examples of differential invariants, Zorawski mentioned Gauss curvature, Beltrami operators, and Minding's geodesic curvature. Similar to Lie, he asked for the number of invariants of different orders. From then on, two concepts played a major role within the theory of differential calculus, initiated by Ricci, and the group concept that was introduced by Lie and improved by Zorawski." The definitions is, however, satisfactorily given by my method as, say (1.7, 1.73, 1.732, ...). [From the present paper]. Cantor is famous for his work on infinite numbers.

Det foreliggende eksemplar har dog en fra Bibliotheca Danica (II:53) afvigende titel til 2. del, idet der her anføres titlen "Forsøg til en Mathematik..."

(12), 88 pp. Rare first appearance of White’s doctoral thesis on various functions and roles of hospitals such as such as treatment, care training and the design and layout of hospitals. Joris White was born in 1731 in Trondheim, son of Thorsten and Ingeborg White. He studied privately, earned degrees in philosophy (1750) and theology (1752) and then turned to medicine. He trained at Frederiks Hospital and became a medical doctor in 1760. In 1761, he was appointed mining physician and lecturer in Kongsberg but died in 1765.

Hölder turned his attention first to simple groups. Besides the simple groups of orders 60 and 168 already known at the time, he found no new ones with a composite order less than 200. Nevertheless, he considered his method to be "of some interest so long as we do not possess a better one suitable for handling the problem generally."
