(Paris, Bachelier), 1840. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome XI (No.18). Pp. (667-) 716. (Entire issue offered). Becquerel's paper:pp. 702-703. Some marginal brownspots, margins slightly soiled, light browning an creasing. First printing of an importent paper in the history of photochemistry as he here discovered some effects of coloured rays of the solar spectrum."Edmund Becquerel seems to be the first person to observe, in 1840 (in the paper offered), that the latent daguerreotype image which had been underexposed could be intensified if re-exposed to the yellow and red rays of the spectrum and then developed with mercury... Explaining this phenomenon, Becquerel called the yellow-red continuing rays ("rayon continuateurs") in contrast to the primary rays, which exicited or produced the light image and which he called exiciting rays ("rayons excitateurs").... They are dependent on the wave lenght of the light."(Eder "History of Photography", pp. 265 ff.)"Becquerel was an early experimenter in photography. In 1840 he discovered that the silver halides, natively insensitive to red and yellow light, became sensitive to that part of the spectrum in proportion to their exposure to blue, violet and ultraviolet light, allowing Daguerreotypes and other photographic materials to be developed by bathing in strong red or yellow light rather than by chemical treatment. In practice this technique was rarely used." (Wikipedia).

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1959. 8vo. In the original printed blue wrappers. In "The Bell System Technical Journal", Volume XXXVIII, July, Number 4, 1959. Entire issue offered. Light miscolouring to spine. A fine fine and clean copy. Pp. 985-1000. [Entire issue: 909-1065 pp.]. First edition of the Lee's important paper on binary decision diagrams, a data structure that is used to represent a Boolean function. The idea was developed by Claude Shannon. The switching function is split into two sub-functions by assigning one variable. If a sub-function is considered as a sub-tree, it can be represented by a binary decision tree. Binary decision diagrams were introduced by Lee in the present paper.

Ann Arbor, Edwards Brothers, 1931. 8vo. In the original grey printed wrappers. Offprint from: "The Annals of Mathematical Statistics", August, 1931. Very light miscolouring to wrappers, otherwise a very fine copy. Pp. 360-378. Scarce offprint of Hotelling's landmark paper on what was later termed as 'Confidence Intervals'. "Important as was his contribution to economics, most of his effort and his influence were felt in the field of mathematical statistics, particularly in the development of multivariate analysis. In a fundamental paper [the present], he generalized Student's test to the simultaneously test of hypotheses about the means of many variables with a joint normal distribution. In the course of this paper, he gave a correct statement of what were later termed 'confidence intervals'. (The New Palgrave).

JACOBI, C.G.J. - PAVING THE WAY FOR DOUBLE PERIODIC FUNCTIONS.

lyn41885
(Berlin, G. Reimer, 1835) 4to. No wrappers as extracted from"Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik. Hrsg. von A.L. Crelle", Bd. 13. Jacobi's paper: pp. 55-78. First appearance of an importent paper on the functions of a complex variable. In an importent paper of 1835 (the item offered) Jacobi showed that a single-valued function of a single variable which for every finite value of the argument has the character of a rational function (that is, is a meromorphic function) cannot have more than two periods, the ratio of the periodics is necessarily a nonreal number. This discovery opened up a new direction of work, namely, the problem of finding all double periodic functions." (Morris Kline).

First printing of 2 importent paper in which the inventor of the "Daniell Cell" records his experiments with the strong battery on electrolysis of some compounds."The use of such cells, often coupled together in long chains to give a large electromotive force, gave great impetus to research in all branches of current electricity and also lead to commercial applications in gilding, electroplating, and glyphography." (DSB III, p. 557).In 1831 Daniell was appointed profesor of Chemistry at King's College London. He invented several scientific instruments, including a hygrometer for measuring humidity he is best known for his work in electrochemistry, his interests having been aroused by the work of his good friend faraday. Volta's battery had the defect of rapid diminution in current. What was needed, however, was a battery yielding a constant current over a considerable lenght of time. In 1836 Daniell succeeded, producing the Daniell cell, of copper and zinc. his was the first reliable source of electric current.

lyn42402
(London, Harrison and Sons, 1880). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1879, Vol. 171 - Part II. Pp. 539-593. First printing of a main paper by the "Father of Geophysics" in which he shows that the effect of the tides was to force a retreat of the moon from the earth - thus going backward in time in the history of the earth, he concludes that the earth had been in contact with the moon, and this represents the time at which the whirling earth threw off a portion of its outer crust by centrifugal action, loosing angular motion in that way."Darwin's most significant contribution to the history of science lies in his pioneering work in the application of detailled dynamical analysis to cosmological and geological problems. That many of his conclusions are now out of date should in no way diminish the historical interest in his experiments, nor the importent service thet he rendered cosmogony by the example he gave of putting various hypotheses to the test of actual calculations. Darwin's method remains a milestone in the development of cosmogony, and subsequent investigators have favored it over the merely qualitative arguments prevalent until that time."(DSB).
