Paris, Chez Bernard, 1806. No wrappers. Ectracts from "Annales de Chimie ou Recueil de Mémoires.." Vol. 57. Pp. 131-174 a. pp. 225-272. With the titlepage to volume 57. First appearance of a classic paper in which Proust describes his discovery of Grape.Sugar and the identificationof this with glucose. He investigated the varieties of sugar that occur in sweet vegetable juices, distinguishing three kinds, and he showed that the sugar in grapes, of which he announced the existence to his classes at Madrid, is identical with that obtained from honey by the Russian chemist J. T. Lowitz.Proust is famous for his work on the steadiness of composition of chemical compounds."In chemistry, the law of definite proportions, sometimes called Proust's Law, states that a chemical compound always contains exactly the same proportion of elements by mass. An equivalent statement is the law of constant composition, which states that all samples of a given chemical compound have the same elemental composition. For example, oxygen makes up 8/9 of the mass of any sample of pure water, while hydrogen makes up the remaining 1/9 of the mass. Along with the law of multiple proportions, the law of definite proportions forms the basis of stoichiometry."(Wikipedia).

POISSON, (SIMÉON-DENIS). - CO-FOUNDING THE "MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF ELASTICITY".
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44897
(Paris, Crochard, 1828). 8vo. Without wrappers. In 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique', Series 2 - Volume 37, Cahier 4. Pp. 337-444 (entire issue offered). Poisson's paper:pp. 337-355. First appearance of one of the founding papers in "The mathematical Theory of Elasticity" and Poisson's first on the subject. "The theory of elasticity based on the idea of a molecular structure attracted Poisson's interest, and he did much to lay the foundations of that science."(Timoshenko p. 111 ff.)."In the preface to the long "Mémoire sur I’équilibre et le movement des corps élastiques" (14 April 1828), the hints yield to explicit declaration. In applying mathematics to physics, Poisson stated, it was necessary at first to employ abstraction and "in this regard, Lagrange has gone as far as possible in replacing physical ties by equations between coordinates." Now, however, "along with this admirable conception," it is necessary to "construct physical mechanics, the principle of which is to reduce everything to molecular actions." In other words, the death of Laplace the previous year enabled Poisson to move boldly ahead with his long range plans and to present himself as Laplace’s successor."(DSB)The issue offered contains notable papers by Berzelius, Gay-Lussac and others.

Among his teachers were neo-Kantian philosopher Ernst Cassirer, mathematician David Hilbert, and physicists Max Planck, Max Born, and Arnold Sommerfeld. Reichenbach received his degree in philosophy from the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1915 with a dissertation on the theory of probability titled Der Begriff der Wahrscheinlichkeit für die mathematische Darstellung der Wirklichkeit (The Concept of Probability for the mathematical Representation of Reality), published in 1916. Between 1917 and 1920, while he was working as a physicist and engineer, Reichenbach attended Albert Einstein's lectures on the theory of relativity at Berlin. He was fascinated by the theory of relativity and in a few years published four books about this subject: The Theory of Relativity and A Priori Knowledge (1920),Axiomatization of the Theory of Relativity (1924), From Copernicus to Einstein (1927), and The Philosophy of Space and Time (1928). In 1920 he began teaching at the Technische Hochschule at Stuttgart as private docent.During his stay in Turkey he published The Theory of Probability (1935). Paris, Victor Masson et Fils, Imprimerie Gauthier-Villars, 1863. Without wrappers. In "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", Troisieme Series - Tome 67, Cahier Avril. Titlepage to tome 68. Pp. 385- 512 pp. and 1 folded colour plate (Spectre solaire, Spectre Thallium, showing the green line). (The entire issue offered). The papers on Thallium: pp. 385-434. Smal, stamps on verso of titlepage. Lamy's paper: pp. 383-417. William Crookes was the first to observe Thallium (1861) as he found a new green line in a selenium sample, but Lamy was the first to isolate it and to prove that it was a metal (1862). The paper offered is Lamy's full description of his discovery, a shorter announcement was published in "Comptes rendus", 23 June 1862.Claude-Auguste Lamy (1820-1878) examined some slime from a sulfuric acid plant at Loos which was using Belgian pyrite and observed the green spectral line. He extracted thallium sesquichloride and isolated the metal new by electrolysis. Only after his discovery, he found out that Crookes had earlier discovered and named the new element, and gave Crookes the honour. Crookes presumed that his Thallium was something of the order of Sulphur, Selenium or Tellurium but Lamy found it to be a metal. In April 1862 he reported to the French Académie des sciences. (Montangero, Piaget, or, The advance of knowledge, 1997, p. 18). There had previously been published works related to psychology of children and teenagers this, however, is the first work to describe the physiology in a scientific way of children as young as 0 to 18 month. It is, [...], the work of Jean Piaget that has been most influential on the way psychologists, educators, and even philosophers have come to think about the cognitive development of children.
