First appearance of this paper describing Wollaston's invention of the Goniometer."Nor was it only in chemistry that he (Wollaston) left his mark. He invented a goniometer, a device to measure the angles between crystal faces, which greatly advance mineralogical research. A calcium silicate mineral is named wollastonite in his honor." (Asimow)."When a surface is so small as one fiftieth of an inch in breadth, it becomes axtremely difficult to apply the short radius of a goniometer to it with correctness. But since a surface of that magnitude may reflect a very brilliant light, the reflected ray may be employed as radius, and may at pleasure be taken of such a lenght that the angles of small crystals can be known with as much precision as those of the largest surfaces."(Abstract).

(København), Gyldendal, 1958. Ubesk. i orig. omsl. Mindre brugsspor v. hjørner og kanter, men et pænt og rent ekspl.Uncut in the orig. wrappers. Minor wear to extremities, but an overall nice and clean copy. Første danske udgave af denne moderne klassiker, der fortæller den tragiske historie om lægen og digteren, Yuri Zhivago, i årene under den Russiske Revolution.First Danish edition of this modern classic, which tells the tragic story of the medical doctor and poet, Yuri Zhivago, in the years during the Russian Revolution.Though begun several decades earlier, the work was completed in 1956, and was submitted for publication to the journal "Novij Mir" the same year, but due to the controversial contents of the work and the Soviet government's dislike of Pasternak, it was rejected. The following year the manuscript was smuggled out of the Soviet Union by the Italian publisher Feltrinelli, who published the book in Russian in Milan in 1957. Already the following year numerous European translations of the work had been made, amongst these the Danish one, though the English and Italian ones appeared as the first. These immediate translations and the publications of them partly caused Pasternak being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1958. Due to the immense popularity of the work, alle the European translations were reprinted numerous times. In 1965 the work was made into the large-scale film-production by David Lean, which was nominated for ten Oscars and won five.

[No place], The Association for Symbolic Logic, 1963. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. In "Journal of Symbolic Logic", Vol. 28, Number 2. June, 1963. A very fine and clean copy. Pp. 135-142. [Entire issue: Pp. 113-175.]. First printing of Fitch's famous paper which laid the foundation for "The Fitch's Paradox of Knowability". "The literature on the knowability paradox emerges in response to a proof first published by Frederic Fitch in his now famous 1963 paper, "A Logical Analysis of Some Value Concepts." Theorem 5, as it was there called, threatens to collapse a number of modal and epistemic differences. Let ignorance be the failure to know some truth. Then Theorem 5 collapses a commitment to contingent ignorance into a commitment to necessary ignorance. For it shows that the existence of truths in fact unknown entails the existence of truths necessarily unknown. Fitch published the proof in 1963 to avert a kind of "conditional fallacy" that threatened his informed-desire analysis of value. The analysis roughly says: x is valuable to s just in case there is a truth p such that were s to known p then she would desire x. The existence of unknowable truths ultimately explains why he restricts the propositional variables to knowable propositions. For an unknowable truth provides for an impossible antecedent in Fitch's counterfactual, and ultimately trivializes the analysis. Since Fitch's theory of value is not the context in which the paradox is widely discussed, we will say no more about it here." (SEP).
