Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59499
Errant Bodies Press, 2020. 8vo in wraps as issued. 60 pages, finely printed. Fine copy. Volume one of a series on transcultural poetics: sound, text and drawings on contemporary urban experienceBased on the author's artistic research on migration, contemporary urban experience, and sonic alienation, The Nomadic Listener is composed of a series of texts stemming from psychogeographic explorations of contemporary cities, including Copenhagen, Berlin, Kolkata, Vienna, Delhi, Hong Kong, Mumbai and New York, among others. Each text is an act of listening, where the author records his surrounding environment and attunes to the sonic fluctuations of movement and the passing of events. What surfaces is a collection of meditations on the occurrences of life movingly interwoven with memories, associations, desires and reflections. As readers we are brought into a tender map of contemporary urban experience, and the often lonely, surprising and random interactions found in traveling. The Nomadic Listener includes parallel drawings based on the original audio recordings, and appear as ghostly renderings of the corresponding experiences. The recordings are published by the German label Gruenrekorder and accessed through a QR code included in the book.

Kirkegaards Antikvariat

University of Tokyo Press, 1978 (1977 / 1975). 8vo in softcover. XLI, 806 pp. Red endpapers. Spines sunned else very good clean set with only minor shelfwear. Second paperback printing 1978 of the first complete translation into English. - The Tale of the Heike is one of the masterworks of Japanese literature, a great martial epic and a masterpiece of world literature and the progenitor of all samurai stories: "The story of the Heike was compiled from a collection of oral stories recited by travelling monks who chanted to the accompaniment of the biwa, an instrument reminiscent of the lute. The most widely read version of the Heike monogatari was compiled by a blind monk named Kakuichi, in 1371. The Heike is considered one of the great classics of Medieval Japanese literature. Two main strands feed into the central ethos of the tale, samurai and buddhist. At one level, the Tale is an account of martial heroism – of courage, cruelty, power, glory, sacrifice and sorrow. Those who emphasise this aspect of the story point to its glorification of the heroic spirit, its avoidance of the realistic brutality and squalor of war, and its aestheticisation of death: a classic instance of the latter is the comparison of the drowned samurai in the final battle to a maple-leaf brocade upon the waves. Others, while still accepting the importance of the military episodes and of heroic figures like Yoshitsune, would emphasise instead the Tale’s immersion in Buddhist thought, and its themes of duty, Dharma, and fate".

Buckingham, Matthew:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir52822
Wien: Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig (Mumok), 2003. Small 8vo in stiff wraps as issued. 83 pages, text in English and German and with photos bw. Near fine / fine clean copy. First edition. "Buckingham transposes the London setting of Poe's story to the Vienna of Sigmund Freud and Graham Greene, tracing a young man’s pursuit of a mysterious, older stranger through the streets of the city for an entire day and night. Failing to learn the stranger’s identity or make a meaningful connection, the young man then begins the hunt anew. Poe's themes of doubling and shadowing, attraction, disorientation, and estrangement, physiognomy and typecasting, and self and doppelganger manifest themselves in the mechanics of the installation. Buckingham projects the film onto and through a semi-metallic, two-way glass screen that produces reversed images and multiple reflections of its protagonists. The twenty-four-hour narrative is condensed into a continuous, twenty-one-minute loop that evokes the young man's never-ending quest. Buckingham insinuates himself into the story—he is seen reflected from time to time in windows and mirrors as he follows on the heels of his fictional characters like a noir detective, or that other mythical type, the inconspicuous, objective documentary filmmaker. The gallerygoer who crosses the path of the projected image also becomes a shadowy figure in the crowd—a "third man."

Flavien, Jean-Pascal:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir51901
Spector Books, 2013. Tall 4to in wraps as issued. 112 pp. with illustrations. Fine clean as new copy, unopened in publishers plastique. 1. ed. - Jean-Pascal Flavien‘s work involves the design and conception of houses that produce a particular situation of living. A form of thinking gives rise to a form of living and dwelling, and the use of these houses furthers this approach to thinking by experimenting with the space, by writing, films, etc. Four houses have been realised thus far: the »viewer« in Rio de Janeiro in 2007, the »no drama house« in Berlin in 2009, the »two persons house« in Sao Paulo in 2010, and the »breathing house« in Pougues-les-Eaux in France in 2012. Each house suggests a specific perspective on the world by proposing different types of interaction through language, space, gesture or mediation of the activities that take place within it. This catalogue is an arrangement of independent parts put next to one another, or side-by-side, like a parataxis, following the development of the most recent houses, the »no drama house« and the "breathing house".

kir57538
New York and London: Anyone Coporation & MIT Press, 2001. Quarto in french wraps as issued. 287 pages. Text in English. Illustrated. Fine clean copy. 1st ed. "At a time when the fragmented ideas and styles in architecture make it seem as if "anything goes," Anything asks whether there are constraints to thought and action that change "anything" to "the thing." In thirty-two original essays, many of them illustrated, leading architects, theorists, historians and others discuss their works. The wide-ranging topics include a "refugee republic," "blur buildings," virtual environments, shopping, and stress. "Anything," it would seem, is many things, opening the way for architecture to embrace history, science, research, and technology. The authors include, among others, Caroline Bos, Ignasi de Solà-Morales, Elizabeth Diller, Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid, Jacques Herzog, Steven Holl, Osamu Ishiyama, Arata Isozaki, Romi Khosla, Rem Koolhaas, Greg Lynn, Rafael Moneo, Jean Nouvel, Wolf Prix, Hani Rashid, Bernard Tschumi, and Ben van Berkel. Anything is the tenth and final book in the ongoing series that began in 1991 with Anyone and was followed by Anywhere, Anyway, Anyplace, Anywise, Anybody, Anyhow, Anytime, and Anymore. Each volume is based on a conference at which architects and leaders in other fields came together to present papers and discuss a particular idea in architecture from a cross-cultural and multidisciplinary perspective.

First edition, fine copy. - "(1–3) Making the audiovisual recording for the exhibition My first sonic Lok at Bahnmuseum Albula, Bergün, 2013. Installation of various analog sensors to record the vibrations and electro-magnetic waves during the operation of the locomotive on the world-famous Albula route. Gion Caprez, Andy Guhl. Live sound mix in the driver’s cab of the locomotive RhB GE 6/6 704 «Davos», 65-ton, 2400 HP engine, 11 kV, 16.7 Hz. (4) Eight different converters from physical waves—used as microphone or speaker. (5–6) My first sonic Lok, 170° video still, from the exhibition at Bahnmuseum Albula, Bergün.Taken from the audiovisual recording of a train locomotive ride on the Albula line. Visual of the cracking sounds of this high-voltage machine recorded by a video camera attached to the window of the locomotive". This book about the experimental musician Andy Guhl at first looks loud and somewhat confusing, but this is part of its programmatic intent. It is a reference to Guhl’s musical credo: for four decades, he has often moved on the border between music and noise with his disassembled and rewired everyday electronic devices. In addition, two important design decisions remind the reader that a book, like live music, has a temporal dimension: the left hand pages show full-bleed still images from audiovisual performances by Guhl, creating a strong rhythm as one leafs through; and on the right-hand pages, a continuous stream of various images and texts flows from top to bottom in a seemingly mechanical layout. On these pages, the unusual paper, reminiscent of carbon paper, is extremely susceptible to the traces left from being touched and scratched. The inevitable rapid wear on the volume, particularly on the cover, transforms each book into a unique art object. Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2014.

Stasig, Stig:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59334
Copenhagen: Book Lab, 2023. Tall large quarto in hardcover boards as issued. 164 pages. Text in English. Fine copy. First edition. "From the Baltic countries and Ukraine in the west, to Siberia far to the east, Georgia, Armenia and the Caucasus in the south. In the years from 1988 to 1993, photographer Stig Stasig traveled around the Soviet Union and photographed life on streets. “Today’s Russia is a product of its past: the tsarist era, the revolution and the Soviet regime, and not least the chaotic break-up period around 1990. The only way we can hope to understand Russia’s behavior today is to familiarize ourselves with history and the completely different reality that the Russian people are and have been subject to. We have a tendency to try to understand Russia’s and Putin’s actions based on our own perception of freedom and democracy. What seems absurd from our point of view can often be understood very differently when looking at the same problem from the Russian side.” – Stig Stasig. Retrograd contains text by Sergej Lebedev, one of the young promising Russian writers in exile, who in his stories about the present draws threads to the past. Book design by Stig Stasig with Michael Jensen of K Grafik. a very intense, poetic and classic photobook documentary. Highly recommended!
