Light sunning to extremities, otherwise fine and clean. 66 pp. First edition of Jessen's doctoral thesis. He later elaborated the thesis into an article that was published in Acta Mathematica in 1934. The same year, he was appointed as a docent at The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Denmark.Børge Christian Jessen (1907 – 1993) was a Danish mathematician best known for his work in analysis, specifically on the Riemann zeta function, and in geometry, specifically on Hilbert's third problem.

He worked on the Euclidean parallell postulate over a period of about 20 years, and his various results with and attacks on the problem, appeared in the different editions of his "Elements". This 12th edition having L.'s demonstration of angle sum by a series of triangles with the same area and angle-sum, not in the previous editions. (Sommerville: Non-Euclidean Geometry 1823:Legendre).

First printing of the paper in which Marey formulates the law, named after him and stating that heart rate is related inversely to arterial blood pressure.Marey contributed greatly to the development of experimental physiology. In 1860 he invented the modern sphygmograph, an instrument for recording the features of the pulse and variation in blood pressure on a graph. In 1861 he formulated Marey's law. First appearance of a famous paper in electrodynamics in which Helmholtz was able to explain the production of electricity by friction and succeeding "in deriving the relations of the series of electrical tensions due to friction, and the theory of the electrical machine, satisfactorily from it.....In this paper....Helmholtz comes back repeatedly to the close connection between electrical and the chemical forces, as well as to the explanation of Volta's fundamental experiment......These researches of Hertz, the results of which were plainly foreseen by helmholtz, gave substantial support to the Faraday-Maxwell hypothesis of the nature of electricity, and confirmed Helmholtz in his opinion of the accuracty of Faraday's conceptions."(Koenigsberger "Hermann von helmholts", pp. 317-321).

Peano was to a very large extend inspired by Leibnitz on this subject.

XI, (1), 376 pp. First edition (of the first text-volume) of this scarce work by French engineer Ainé of water related constructions, and all sort of waterworks, construction of Canals, harbours, bridges, pump-houses etc. in Italy and France. Ainé was the French Chief Engineer of Roads and Bridges, member-professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and privately did extensive research on the arts of antiquity and their emigration from the East.

First appearance of Thomson's second paper on the Vortex Atom. In 1882 he had won a prize with the subject "a general investigation of the action upon each other of two closed vortices in a perfect incompressible fluid"The first attempt to construct a physical model of an atom was made by Lord Kelvin in 1867. The main point was that in an ideal fluid, a vortex line is always composed of the same particles, it remains unbroken, so it is ring-like."In fact, the investigations of vortices, trying to match their properties with those of atoms, led to a much better understanding of the hydrodynamics of vortices - the constancy of the circulation around a vortex, for example, is known as Kelvin's law. In 1882 another Thomson, J. J., won a prize for an essay on vortex atoms, and how they might interact chemically. After that, though, interest began to wane - Kelvin himself began to doubt that his model really had much to do with atoms, and when the electron was discovered by J. J. in 1897, and was clearly a component of all atoms, different kinds of non-vortex atomic models evolved."(Michael Fowler).
