New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1971. 8vo. Original full green cloth, bound with the original blue wrappers. Volume 50, 1971 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". Library stamp to free front end-paper and title page. Minor bumping to extremities. A nice and clean copy. [Mentioned articles:] Pp: 219-700. [Entire issue:XXXVII, (3), 1098]. First edition of the technical description of Bell System's picturephone System. When the system was launched it was regarded as a state of the art information tool. It was being used in various science fiction-movies, among these, Stanley Cubric's A Space Odyssey."The AT&T picturephone offered full motion, a monochrome picture, and about half the resolution of a conventional TV image. It worked over three phone lines, and though fairly costly, was somewhat affordable. The AT&T picturephone utilized sophisticated image technology and was a well designed product offering desk-top, impulse use." (Noll, Michael. Highway of dreams: a critical view along the information superhighway, 1997, p. 27).It never became a huge success and after a few years only, it was taken off the market. In the history of the telephone and communication in general, however, it occupies an important role, as this was the first time that a visual personal communication tool was being offered to a broad audience. In this respect, it can be regarded as the forerunner of web-cam and video mobiles. Other papers of interest is contained in the present volume:1. Baird, Jack A. The Picturephone System: Foreword. (28),491,(38) pp., a few textillustrations. Macrobius was one of the leading popularizers of science in the Latin West, and his conception of the world geography as an equatorial and meridional ocean (depicted in the book) dividing the earth into four quarters, dominated scientific thinking on world geography in the Middle Ages. - His "Saturnalia" deals with Roman feasts in form of table-talk at a banquet in Rome, giving information of food and drink and their preparation.and is fascinatingly rich in philological, historical, antiquarian and scientific lore, throwing a clear light on the interests and taste of the period.

FARADAY, MICHAEL.. - ON THE VOLTAIC BATTERY.

lyn42285
(London, Richard Taylor, 1835). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1835 - Part II. Pp. 263-274. Clean and fine. First appearance of this paper in which Faraday describes his improvements of the Voltaic battery."This paper relates altogether to the practical construction and use of the voltaic battery. Guided by the principles developed in former series, the author concluded that in voltaic instruments in which the copper surrounded the zinc, there was no occasion for insulation of the contiguos coppers, provided they did not come into metallic contact; and therefore in the cionstruction of some new instruments he interposed paper only between the coppers instead of the usual insulating plate of porcelain or glass."(Abstract)..From 1831 to 1852 Michael Faraday published his "Experimental Researches in Electricity" in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These papers contain not only an impressive series of experimental discoveries, but also a collection of heterodox theoretical concepts on the nature of these phenomena expressed in terms of lines of forces and fields. He published 30 papers in all under this general title. They represents Faraday's most importent work, are classics in both chemistry and physics and are the experimental foundations for Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory of light, using Faraday's concepts of lines of force or tubes of magnetic and electrical forces. His many experiments on the effects of electricity and magnetism presented in these papers lead to the fundamental discoveries of 'induced electricity' (the Farday current), the electronic state of matter, the identity of electricity from different sources, equivalents in electro-chemical decomposition, electrostatic induction, hydro-electricity, diamagnetism, relation of gravity to electricity, atmospheric magnetism and many other."Among experimental philosophers Faraday holds by universal consent the foremost place. The memoirs in which his discoveries are enshrined will never ceaseto be read with admiration and delight; and future generations will preserve with an affection not less enduring the personal records and familiar letters, which recall the memory of his humble and unselfish spirit."(Edmund Whittaker in A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity).

New York, Argus Books, 1946. Small folio. In the original printed red and white wrapper. Wrappers with some soiling of a 5 x 2 cm repair to front wrapper. Internally fine and clean. (10), 116 pp. The rare American abridged (90 pages of notes removed) edition of this seminal and highly controversial work on the British/Palestine issue. Despite the fact that this edition was issued in a more popular rendition, shortened and with a more colorful and inviting cover, intended for the American audience, it is rarely offered for sale. The Rape of Palestine presents a devastating criticism of the British politics in Israel. The British Foreign Office declared the book "violent and offensive" and monitored Ziff closely thereafter. Ziff was one of the most prominent American supporters of Revisionist Zionism and took active part in politics and was persuaded by Revisionist Zionist leader Ze'ev Jabotinsky to accept the presidency of the Zionist-Revisionists of America organization.

BREWSTER, DAVID - DISCOVERING A NEW PROPERTY OF HEAT BIREFRINGENCE IN GLASS
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn45239
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1814). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 18154 - Part II. Pp. 436-439. First appearance of an importent paper in which Brewster reveals his discovery of a new connection between light and heat: "glass brought to a certain temperature forms two images, and polarises them in opposite manner, like all doubly refracting crystals, the one image being coincident with the other"(p. 437). Brewster was the discoverer of the law of polarization, of biaxal crystals, of optical mineralogy, and of double refraction by compression.Independently of Seebeck, in 1814 English physicist David Brewster started investigating birefringence in glass caused by inhomogeneous heating. He also investigated the effect of sudden cooling of heated glass and discovered that in broken glass birefringence vanishes. Brewster considered his discovery so important* that he hastily published a paper, in which he only verbally described the creation of birefringence in glass by heat. With 2 other notable papers by HENRY KATER "An improved Method of dividing Astronomical Circles and other Instruments", pp. 419-435a. 2 folded engraved plates. And JOHN W.F. HERSCHEL "Consideration of various Points of Analysis", pp. 440-468.
