RAMSAY, WILLIAM & JOHN SHIELDS. - MOLECULAR SURFACE ENERGY SHOWN.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44170
(London, Harrison and Sons, 1894). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", 1893, Vol. 184. Pp. 647-673 a. 2 plates. First appearance of an importent paper in the history of physical chemistry in which the authors for the first time shows experimentally that "the molecular surface energy decreases linearly with the temperature, and that the temperature coefficient of molecular surface energy is a colligative property. Determination of the temperature coefficient of molecular surface energy, therefore, were largely employed for the purpose of calculating the molecular weights, and therefrom the molecular complexity, of substances in the liquid state."(Findley "A Hundred years of Chemistry", p. 79).

RASK, RASMUS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn60513
København, Poppske Offisin, 1837. 8vo. Uncut and unopened in the original blue wrappers. Internally near mint. 12,56 pp. First Danish edition of Rask's 'Grammar of the Danish Language', translated by his half-brother H. K. Rask. This edition often appears with the variant title page stating: "R. K. Rasks / Danske Sproglære, / fra Engelsk oversat / og indrettet til Brug for Danske." The most significant difference between the two variants is the "K.", short for Kristian, in Rask's name. Due to his critical thoughts on Christianity, and religion altogether, Rask stopped using 'Kristian' as a middle name. Accordingly, it is reasonable to assume that the title page of the present copy is the second title page, added later as desired by H. K. Rask. Hjelmslev I, 211.

FOUCAULT, (JEAN BERNARD LEON) - EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE FOR THE WAVE-THEORY OF LIGHT.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44783
Paris, Victor Masson, 1854. No wrappers. Extracted from "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 3me Series - Tome 41. With titlepage to Tome 41. Pp. 120-164 and 1 large folded engraved plate showing the experimental apparatus. Some foxing throughout. The periodical issue of Foucault's doctorial thesis in which he for the first time showed that light slows down in water, thus giving experimental evidence for the undulatory theory of light."He...made use of his mirror method to measure the velocity of light through water and other transparent media. As long before as the time of Huygens and Newton it had been suggested that one way of settling the dispute as to whether light was a wave form or a stream of particles was by measuring its velocity in water. According to the wave theory, light should slow down in water; according to the particle theory, it should speed up. In 1853 showed that the velocity of light was less in water than in air, a strong piece of evidence in favor of the wave theory. He presented this work as his doctoral thesis."(Asimov).

KRAMERS, H.A.

lyn47628
København, Andr. Fred. Høst, 1919. 4to. Uncut, unopened in the original printed wrappers. Offprint from "Memoires de L'Academie Royale des Sciences et des Letteres de Danemark". Light miscolouring to extremities. Otherwise a very fine and clean copy. Pp. 287-384, XVI + 4 plates. Offprint issue of Kramer's doctorial thesis. Kramer was Niels Bohr's first assistent when Bohr's Institute opened in 1920, later he returned to Utrecht and became sucessor to Ehrenfest. - The frequency of spectral lines did not coincide with a kinetic frequency of electrons, but was only partly explained by Bohr's correspondence principle. Kramers developed here in this work the mathematical formalism required to unite these ideas, leading to an interpretation of the intensities of Stark Components."In his 1919 dissertation, Kramers calculated in detail the intensities and polarizations of the hydrogen spectral lines, including Zeeman and Stark effects. His results were in good, if not perfect, agreement with experimental data". (Kragh, Quantum Generations, P. 157).

LAPLACE, PIERRE-SIMONE. - LAPLACE'S THEORY OF CAPILLARITY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49624
Paris, Crochard, 1819. Later full buckram. Gilt lettering on spine. Stamp on verso of title-page.. "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", Tome 12.. Entire volume offered. 448 pp. a. 1 folded engraved plate. Laplace's papers: pp. 5-12, pp. 37-41 a. pp. 337-341. Scattered brownspots. The paper on Capillarity is the last version of this theory in which he refined it to take account of the effect of heat in reducing the attractive force between the particles of a liquid. "The net attractive force was now taken as the difference between the innate attraction (the only force considered in the supplement to the "Mecanique celeste") and a repulsive force that was supposed to be caused by the presence of heat."(DSB). - Using the theory of Boscovich, "who assumed that between every two ultimate particles and along the lines connecting them forces act which are attractive for some distances and repulsive for others. Using this theory, with the added requirements that that the molecular forces diminish rapidly with increase of the distances between the molecules, Laplace was able to develop his theory of capillarity (referring to the offered paper)."(Timoshenko "History of the Strenghts of Material", p. 104).The 2 papers here offered on probability applied, were both incorporated into the third edition of "Theoriques analytique des probabilities" (1820).

(London, Taylor and Francis, 1864). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" Vol. 154 - Part II, pp. 139-160 and 2 large folded engraved plates. First appearance of Huggin's series of spectra done with his new spectroscope made of six prism of heavy glass as a preliminary investigation to the work with the spectroscopy of the stars with the star-spectroscope, as it was necessary to have convenient maps of the spectra of terrestrial elements. Huggins devoted a large part of 1863 to the making of 24 such maps with a train of six prismes. These maps were published in the paper offered."William Huggins (1824-1910), English astronomer, a pioneer in spectroscopy and photography. He examined spectroscopically the chemical constitution of stars and comets, and the gaseous nature of planetary and diffuse nebulae; he applied the Doppler Principle to the measurement of the radial velocities of stars, and published an atlas of representative stellar spectra" (Ripley: Source Book in Astronomy).

We remember this collaboration chiefly, if not solely, for the famous investigatuon on Calorimetry, which resulted in one of the aknowledged classics of science, the joint "Mémoir sur la Chaleur", pulished in the Histoire et Mémoires of the Academy of Sciences in 1784."(Henry Guerlac).
