Madrid, 1930. 4to. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering and stamp to front board. With the authors dedication to title-page. With occassional marginal underlignings in pencil. 62 pp. First edition of Prof. De Buen chronological list of voyages, long and short, made by vessels of all countries that have resulted in addition to oceanographical knowledge"The entries are arranged separately for each country, and indications are in most cases given of objects or results of the voyages, names of the leaders, and in some cases of scientific personnel. The compiler is open to receive corrections or additions to the list, which indeed appears to be very complete already. The earlier entries, which begin at the end of the fifteenth century, are for voyages primarily of a geographical nature. It is interesting to note that the British records, although not given in great detail, occupy nearly one-half the whole." (Nature, 1932).

(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1746). 4to. No wrappers, as issued in "Mémoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres", 1745, tome I. Pp. 54-70 and with halftitlepage to the section. First printing of an importent papeer in which Bernoulli gives his solution of the problem of a mass point constrained to slide within a rigid rotating body. His solution was obtained from other principles than Euler, who gave a solution at the same time, obtaining the same result. This paper was translated into German and reprinted in Ostwald’s Klassiker der Exacten Wissenschaften, no. 191."The principle of areas and an extended version of the principle concerning the conservation of live force, both of which furnished integrals of Newton’s basic equations, were published by Bernoulli, probably with Euler’s assistance, in the Berlin Mémoires in 1745 and 1748. The principle of areas was used and clearly formulated almost simultaneously by Bernoulli and Euler in their treatments of the problem involving the movement of a tube rotating around a fixed point and containing freely moving bodies.!(DSB).The Bernoulli paper comes together with LEONHARD EULER "De la Force de Percussion et de sa veritable Mesure. Traduit de Latin" (Percussion and its true measurement), pp. 21-53, but lacking the plate. (Enestroem: E 82). An importent on the forces of percussions.

Bruxelles, J.P. Meline (Imprimerie de J. Stienon), 1837. Cont. black hcalf w. richly gilt back. Upper capital a bit worn. All edges marbled. A few leaves w. a bit of brownspotting. Rare edition of Lacroix's interesting book about the Man in the Iron Mask, which is a heavily discussed theme in French litterature. During the reign of Louis XIV, the mysterious man in the iron mask, the face of whom nobody saw, was kept prisoner in a number of jails, among these the Bastille, in the last half of the 17th century. According to Lacroix's theory, the Man in the Iron Mask was Nicolas Fouquet, who was imprisoned in Pignerol in 1665. Fouquet (1615-1680) was Viscount of Melon and Vaux, superintendant of finances to Louis XIV and protector of writers and artists, untill he fell in ill grace in 1661, was imprisoned and died under mysterious circumstances.Paul Lacroix (1807-1884) is renowned for his several important historical works and his numerous works of bibliographical contents, regarding which he can be said to have continued the tradition of Nodier. He wrote a number of historical novels, which were very popular at the time. They were reprinted numerous times, and were translated into several languages. Most of his works are published under pseudonym, because of which he is now best known under the name of "Bibliophile Jacob". Aged 28 he was awarded the cross of the "Légion d'Honneur" for his work on the history of the 16th century, and 1842 he founded "L'Alliance des Arts" together with M. Thoré. Apparently the first edition, which is quite scarce, appeared in Paris in 1836. Not in Carteret.
