XI, (1), 376 pp. First edition (of the first text-volume) of this scarce work by French engineer Ainé of water related constructions, and all sort of waterworks, construction of Canals, harbours, bridges, pump-houses etc. in Italy and France. Ainé was the French Chief Engineer of Roads and Bridges, member-professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and privately did extensive research on the arts of antiquity and their emigration from the East.

Internally fine, printed on good paper. Text in Greek and Latin. Second printing (the best) of De Furia's noted edition. "Reprinted at Leipzig (the offered item), in a very handsome and more copious manner, in the following year (1810). This beautiful and elaborate editions presents us with the Fables of Æsop before they had been corrupted (as is supposd) by their first editor, Planudes. The text is taken from a celebrated and very ancient MS, preserved at Florence, in the Library of the Cassini Monks; written in a different style, and greatly departing, from the received text... This appears to be, upon the whole, the very best edition of Æsop extant." (Dibdin I, p. 252).

First printing of perhaps Humboldt's most importent paper in chemistry."In fact, immediately following this clash (the clash with Fourcroy over the vitalistic principle in organic chemistry, where Fourcroy considered "that Mr. Humboldt proceed to quickly in his explanations"), Humboldt went to Vauquelin and Fourcroy's laboratories in Paris where he sought to gain experience on the new French methodology. Thanks to this training, Humboldt wrote a memoir on the earth's absorption of oxygen that was soon to become famous (the paper offered). He states that: "The squareroot of 3 is thus only a symbol for number which has yet to to be found, but is not its definition. The definitions is, however, satisfactorily given by my method as, say (1.7, 1.73, 1.732, ...). [From the present paper]. Cantor is famous for his work on infinite numbers.
