HILBERT, D. UND W. ACKERMANN. - THE FOUNDATION OF MODERN MATHEMATICAL LOGIC.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn46101
Berlin, Springer, 1928. Orig. full cloth. Lower part of spine with loss of cloth. Lower right cornerof titlepage cut away, no loss of letters. VIII,120 pp. First edition. (Die Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenshaften in Einzeldarstellungen, Band XXVII). In the years 1917-22 Hilbert gave three seminal courses at the Univeristy og Göttingen on logic and the foundation of mathematics. He received considerable help in preperation and eventual write up of these lectures from Bernays. This material was subsequently reworked by Ackermann into the monograph 'Grundzüge der Theoretischen Logik' (the offered item). It containes the first exposition ever of first-order logic and poses the problem of its completeness and the decision problem ('Entscheidungsproblem'). The first of these questions was answered just a year later by Kurt Gödel in his doctorial dissertation 'Die Vollständigkeit der Axiome des logischen Funktionenkalküls'. This result is known as Gödel's completeness theorem. Two years later Gödel published his famous 1931 paper 'Über formal unentscheidbare Sätze der Principia Mathematica und verwandter Systeme I' in which he showed that a stronger logic, capable of modeling arithmetic, is either incomplete or inconsistent (Gödel's second incompleteness theorem). The later question posed by Hilbert and Ackermann regarding the decision problem was answered in 1936 independantly by Alonzo Church and Allan Turing. Church used his model the lambda-calculus and Turing his machine model to construct undecidable problems and show that the decision problem is unsolvable in first-order logic. These results by Gödel, Church, and Turing rank amongst the most important contributions to mathematical logic ever.

lyn46033
Paris, G. Masson, 1890. Contemp. hcalf. Light wear along edges. Two small stamps on verso of titlepage. In "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 6. Series - Tome XX. 576 pp. The entire volume offered. Raoult's paper: pp. 297-371. Clean and fine. First printing of an importent paper in which Raoult gives further applications of his own discovery, "Raoult's Law""Raoult soon turned to the anomalous results with salts in water, which had puzzled previous investigators. He classified the salts he used according to the valence of the radicals and found that the lowering of the freezing point could be accounted for by assigning certain numbers to these radicals. He demonstrated that the freezing point lowering obtained with these salts was consistent with the hypothesis that the salt radicals themselves acted as if they existed independently in the solution, and that certain radicals were more effective than others in lowering the freezing point of water. With the statement that "the neutral salts of mono and di-basic salts act as if the electropositive and electronegative radicals of these salts when dissolved in water solution do not combine, but remain as simple mixtures (in the paper offered), Raoult showed that he had come to accept much of Arrhenius’ work on ionization."(DSB).

He invented the dynamo-electric machine, or self-energising dynamo, published in 1866. The machine was considered remarkable at the time, especially since Wilde was fond of spectacular demonstrations, such as the ability of his machine to cause iron bars to melt.

FREDHOLM, IVAR.

Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, Almqvist & Wiksell, 1900. 4to. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Acta Mathematica", Vol, 23, 1900. Entire volume offered. Stamps to title page and wear to extremities, otherwise a fine and clean copy. Pp. 1-42.[Entire volume: (4), 416 pp]. First appearance of Fredholm's doctoral thesis (finish in 1898 but not published till 1900) and his first major work in partial differential equations. His doctoral dissertation involved a study of partial differential equations, the study of which was motivated by an equilibrium problem in elasticity. He solved his operator equation in the particular cases which arise in the study of the physical problem in his thesis (and in the paper which appeared in 1900 based on that thesis)"Fredholm's first major work was in partial differential equations. His doctoral thesis, written in 1898 and published in 1900, involved the study of the equation-written in Fredholm's own operator notation. [...] This equation is significant because it occurs in the study of deformation of anisotropic media (such as crystals) subjected to interior or exterior forces. Initially, Fredholm solved only the particular equations associated with the physical problem; in 1908 he completed this work by finding the fundamental solution to the general elliptical partial differential equations with constant coefficients." Stamp to front free end-paper, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 375-389. [Entire volume: VIII, 917 pp.]. First printing of London's early paper on Gauge Theories and Weak Interactions in which London anticipated many of Weyl and Pauli's ideas on the same subject."In the face of such elementary experimental evidence, it must have been an unusually strong metaphysical conviction that prevented Weyl from abandoning the idea that Nature would have to make use of the beautiful geometrical possibility that was o?ered. He stuck to his conviction and evaded discussion of the above-mentioned contradictions through a rather unclear re-interpretation of the concept of "real state", which, however, robbed his theory of its immediate physical meaning and attraction."
