(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1819). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1819 - Part I. Pp. 11-27, 1 textillustr. First appearance of one of Brewsters importent paper in the field of optical mineralogy, a field he himself created. In the paper he investigates the polarization-force of double refracting crystals. In 1819 he was able to group all but a few of hundreds of minerals and crystals into mutually consistent optical and mineralogical categories: the primitive form determined the number of axes of double refraction."He regarded "all the various phenomena of polarisation of light by reflexion and refraction as brought under the dominion of laws as well determined as those which regulate the motions of the planets." In 1816 he received the Copley Medal, in 1819 two Rumford Medals, and in 1831 a Royal Medal for the papers in which he announced these discoveries. On the popular level, Brewster’s reputation was established in 1816 by the fad for his kaleidoscope. Its invention was a direct result of his studies of the ory of polarization by multiple reflections."(DSB).

Pp. 337-512 a. 1 folded plate, (entire issue offered "Heft" 7). Hertz's paper: pp. 414-448. First printing of Hertz's first paper by which he won the Philosophical Faculty Prize (Berlin) in 1879, earning a medal, a first publication in Annalen der Physik and Helmholtz' deepening respect."To encourage experimental work in the notoriously difficult domain of unclosed currents, Helmholtz proposed for the prize of the Berlin Philosophical Faculty in 1878 a problem dealing with an implication of Weber’s theory: when oscillations of electricity are set up in an unclosed circuit, Weber’s hypothetical electrical inertia should reveal itself in a retardation of the oscillations. Through the experiments that Helmholtz had suggested on the self-induction of doubly wound spirals, Hertz won the Philosophical Faculty prize; he proved that the inertia of electricity is either zero or less than a very small value, thereby lending experimental support to Helmholtz’ theoretical judgment of the improbability of Weber’s theory."(DSB).

First English translation of Olber's famous work on the orbits of comets."In 1796 Olbers discovered a Comet and calculated its parabolic orbit with a new method, simpler than that used by Laplace. In a letter to F.X. von Zach...Olbers asked whether his treatise on this method shouild be printed, and if so, how this could be done. After reading the tratise and using it with excellent results to compute the orbit of the comet of 1779, which had presented great difficulties to many astronomers, von Zach decided to see it through the press himself. It appeared in Weimar in 1797 under the title "Über die leichteste und bequemste Methode, die Bahn eines Kometen aus einigen Beobachtungen zu berechnen" This work immediately established Olbers among the formost astronomers of his time, and his method was used tyhroughout the nineteenth century."(DSB X, p. 198).
