(London, Harrison and Sons, 1879). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1879 - Vol. 170 - Part I. Pp. 87-134, textillustrations. Clean and fine. This paper, recording a series of further experiments with "The Crook Tube" and "the lines of pressure" under radiation, is an importent paper in the history of vacuum physics.Sir William Crookes (1832-1919) studied at the Royal College of Chemistry , London, and served there as an assistant to Hoffmann. In 1859 he founded the Chemical News and remained its proprietor and editor until his death. He early attracted attention by his discovery of the element thallium by spectroscopic methods. He was an active investigator in many fields of physics and contributed greatly to the advance of knowledge by his study of the radiometer and of the electric discharge in rarefied gases.

(ARAGO, DOMINIQUE- FRANCOIS). - THE DISCOVERY OF MAGNETIZATION BY WAY OF THE VOLTAIC CURRENT.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44807
(Paris, Crochard, 1820). No wrappers as extracted fron 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique', Volume 15 (2e Series). Pp. 93-102. First appearance of this importent paper in which Arago gives an account of his discovery of how iron and steel could be magnetized by the action of the voltaic current, THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS THE ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. "Arago .... made several important contributions to electromagnetism on his own. On 20 September 1820 he announced the discovery of the temporary magnetization of soft iron by an electric current, which suggested to Ampère a theory about the nature of magnetic "currents" and provided the technological key to the electric telegraph. Ampère calculated that the magnetic power could be multiplied by twisting the current-carrying wire into a helix, and with Arago he carried out the first experiments on primitive solenoids. In his historical articles Arago was always careful to credit Ampère with the major share of this discovery, which ultimately depended upon Ampère’s mathematical theory."(DSB).Arago formed a close freinship with Fresnel, whose views on the nature of light he ardently supported. He assisted Fresnel in some of his most importent work and made original discoveries in the same field.Magie "A Source Book in Physics", p. 443 ff.

lyn49774
Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, Beijer, 1902. 4to. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Acta Mathematica", Vol, 25, 1902. Entire volume offered. Stamps to title page, otherwise a fine and clean copy. pp. 1-86.[Entire volume: (4), 383 pp]. First appearance of Painlevé's important paper in which he introduced some of his transcendents, now know as "Painlevé transcendents".Painlevé transcendents are solutions to certain nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equations in the complex plane with the Painlevé property (the only movable singularities are poles), but which are not generally solvable in terms of elementary functions. "In old problems in which the difficulties seemed insurmountable, Painlevé defined new transcendentals for singular points of differential equations of a higher order than the first. In particular he determined every equation of the second order and first degree whose critical points are fixed. The results of these studies are applicable to the equations of analytical mechanics which admit rational or algebraic first integrals with respect to the velocities. Proving, in the words of Hadamard’s éloge, that "continuing [the work of] Henri Poincaré was not beyond human capacity," Painlevé extended the known results concerning the n-body problem. He also corrected certain accepted results in problems of friction and of the conditions of certain equilibriums when the force function does not pass through a maximum."Paul Painlevé later became the French prime minister.

MUDGE, WILLIAM. - FIRST MEASUREMENT OF AN ARC OF THE MERIDIAN IN ENGLAND.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42330
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1803). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1803 - Part II. Pp. 383-508 and 8 engraved plates (3 folio size and folded, 1 map), depicting the apparatus for measuring. First appearance of an importent paper, which contributed to the discussion of the dimension of the earth. William Mudge was appointed in 1791 to the ordnance trigonometrical survey, and became superintendent of the survey in 1798 and in that same year was also elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Shortly afterwards, he completed the first ever measurement of an arc of meridian stretching from Dunnose on the Isle of Wight to Clifton in Yorkshire. This was regarded as a very considerable advance in the scientific work of what had by then become the Ordnance Survey and contributed significantly to the international debate about the precise figure of the earth.
