First apperance of a milestone paper in plant physiology as the concept of tropistic behaviour arose from the experiments described in this paper. Knight showed that forces, generated by means of a water-wheel, made roots and shoots of seedlings orient themselves to centrifugal forces, just as they do to gravity.Knight's investigations on geotropism "enabled Knight to distinguish between geotropic and hydrotropic reactions of the root, and opened the whole question of tropic responses, of their physical basis and adaptive significance in the lfe of plants."(Morton, "History of Botanical Science", p. 390.)."His most famous work was on what are now called geotropisms. In a letter read by Banks to the Royal Society in 1806, Knight described how he eliminated the influence of gravitation on germinating seeds: He attached them at various angles to the rim of a vertical wheel which was driven by a stream in his garden to revolve continuously at a rate of 150 r.p.m. As the germinating plants grew, each shoot was directed to the center of the wheel; when a shoot passed the center of the wheel its tip turned back so that growth was still centripetal; the roots grew away from the center. Next he set up a similar structure with the wheel horizontal and rotating at 250 r.p.m. so that the seedlings were influenced by both gravitation of the earth an the centrifugal force. In this case, growth was at an angle of 80° to the vertical, the shoot upward and inward, and the root downward and out. Reducing the rotation to 80 r.p.m. decreased the centrifugal force to such an extent that the plants grew at an angle of 45° to the vertical."(DSB).

Inner front hinge a bit weak, otherwise internally fine. 552, 12 (adds) pp. First edition, later issue or second edition? With the be-became misprint on p. 11 and the four-line printed dedication "To/ the Wife of my Youth/ who/ still abides with me". Wallece wished to dedicate this his second printed work to his wife, and asked her to compose the dedication, which first became "To/ the Wife of my Youth" as it reads in the scarce first edition, first - third state. Due to this dedication Wallace's wife was thought to be dead, and as a result he received numerous marriage-proposals and letters of sympathy, thus in the second edition they added the two other lines "who/ still abides with me". No first edition is known to have this four-line dedication. The second edition, which is usually mistaken for the first (due to the only year of printing being the copyright-year (1880) on the verso of the title-page) is supposed to have 560 pp + 16 pp adds, whereas this copy has 552 pp + 12 pp adds like the first edition. No other edition than the first is known to have appeared with this same number of pp. This copy seems to contain the fourth state of adds, beginning with "The Octavo Paper Novels...". Thus this is a rare or unknown variant of the first or second edition?

First appearance of the paper in which Le Chevalier describes his invention of the Optical Pyrometer which was the first instrument to measure degrees Celsius over 3000."Henri LeChatelier creates a practical optical pyrometer for measuring the temperature of hot bodies from the light intensity in a narrow wavelenght band by optical comparison of an image of the body in question and a glowing filament. First appearance of Hovgaard's important proposal to investigate the east coast of Greenland which resulted in the expedition of "Djimphna" and "Varna".This proprosal was translated and published in English the same year.

Pp. 101-109 First printing of Brewsters first paper in the Transactions in which he gives a preliminary result of his testing of the transmission of light through around 200 transparent substances. In a paper issued the next year (1814) he called the different phenomena that he observed here, Biaxal and Uniaxal.
