lyn50376
(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1906). 8vo. No wrappers. Extracted from "Annalen der Physik" Vierte Folge. Bd. 21. Entire issue no. 13 offered. Pp. 401-456. [Entire issue: Pp. 401-608]. First appearance of Stark's extensive paper and most detailed paper on the Doppler-effect. In 1919 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics: "for his discovery of the Doppler effect in canal rays and the splitting of spectral lines in electric fields"."With the relatively elaborate equipment available to him in his own laboratory at Aachen, Stark completed his research in progress, chiefly on the dissymmetry of Bremsstrahlung, and undertook new series of experiments on the splitting of spectral lines in an electric field. While at Göttingen he had been encouraged by Woldemar Voigt to investigate this electrical analogy to the magnetic Zeeman effect. Stark’s first preparatory experiment, at the beginning of 1906, had been a failure; but he was successful in October 1913. He described the experiment in a short autobiographical account. Having procured all the necessary equipment -"a high-intensity spectrograph of rather large dispersion, high-tension sources, and Gaede pumps" - he looked for the effect "simultaneously in the hydrogen and helium lines." An electric field of between 10,000 and 31,000 volts/cm, was established in the canal-ray tube." (DSB)

All abelian groups are Dedekind groups. A non-abelian Dedekind group is called a Hamiltonian group

lyn50386
Lund, Håkan Olssons Buckdruckerei, 1906. Lex8vo. Orig. printed wrappers. One of Rydberg's own copies with "Ueberreicht vom Verfasser" printed on frontwrapper. 30 pp., 2 large folded tables (the periodic system). First edition of important revison of the periodic system in one the author's presentation copies ("Ueberreicht vom verfasser)."Rydberg’s study of the periodic properties of the elements led him in 1897 to suggest that certain characteristics of the elements could be more simply organized by using an atomic number instead of the atomic weights. This atomic number was to be identified with the ordinal index of the element in the periodic table. In 1906 Rydberg stated for the first time (the paper offered) that 2, 8, and 18 (that is, 2n2, where n= 1,2,3) represented the number of elements in the early periods of the system. In 1913 he went further, correcting an earlier error about the number of rare earths from 36 to 32, thus allowing the n = 4 group to be included in the pattern." (DSB).

lyn46827
New York, Argus Books, 1946. Small folio. In the original printed red and white wrapper. Wrappers with some soiling of a 5 x 2 cm repair to front wrapper. Internally fine and clean. (10), 116 pp. The rare American abridged (90 pages of notes removed) edition of this seminal and highly controversial work on the British/Palestine issue. Despite the fact that this edition was issued in a more popular rendition, shortened and with a more colorful and inviting cover, intended for the American audience, it is rarely offered for sale. The Rape of Palestine presents a devastating criticism of the British politics in Israel. The British Foreign Office declared the book "violent and offensive" and monitored Ziff closely thereafter. Ziff was one of the most prominent American supporters of Revisionist Zionism and took active part in politics and was persuaded by Revisionist Zionist leader Ze'ev Jabotinsky to accept the presidency of the Zionist-Revisionists of America organization.
