[DREIER, FREDERIK].
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn61890
Kjøbenhavn, P.G. Philipsen, 1848. 8vo. (DBL).

(New York), American physical Society, 1959. Lex8vo. Volume 3, No. 2, July 15, 1959 of "Physical Review Letters", In the original printed blue wrappers. Minor soiling to top left corner of front wrapper, otherwise a very nice and clean copy externally as well as internally. Pp. 77-78. [Entire issue: Pp. 77-123]. First printing of Hubbard's exceedingly influential paper."This very mathematical Letter has had a significant impact in all areas of physics and chemistry. The formalism enables the calculation of the thermodynamic properties of quantum-mechanical systems in condensed matter and in quark matter. Hubbard outlines a rederivation of results for the correlation energy of an electron gas, of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity, and of correlations in nuclear matter. The mathematical techniques have also made possible numerical Monte Carlo calculations of the properties of quantum-mechanical systems". (From Physical Review Letters: 50th Anniversary Milestone Papers).

Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, Beijer, 1902. 4to. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Acta Mathematica", Vol, 25, 1902. Entire volume offered. Stamps to title page, otherwise a fine and clean copy. pp. 1-86.[Entire volume: (4), 383 pp]. First appearance of Painlevé's important paper in which he introduced some of his transcendents, now know as "Painlevé transcendents".Painlevé transcendents are solutions to certain nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equations in the complex plane with the Painlevé property (the only movable singularities are poles), but which are not generally solvable in terms of elementary functions. "In old problems in which the difficulties seemed insurmountable, Painlevé defined new transcendentals for singular points of differential equations of a higher order than the first. In particular he determined every equation of the second order and first degree whose critical points are fixed. The results of these studies are applicable to the equations of analytical mechanics which admit rational or algebraic first integrals with respect to the velocities. Proving, in the words of Hadamard’s éloge, that "continuing [the work of] Henri Poincaré was not beyond human capacity," Painlevé extended the known results concerning the n-body problem. He also corrected certain accepted results in problems of friction and of the conditions of certain equilibriums when the force function does not pass through a maximum."Paul Painlevé later became the French prime minister.

MUDGE, WILLIAM. - FIRST MEASUREMENT OF AN ARC OF THE MERIDIAN IN ENGLAND.

lyn42330
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1803). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1803 - Part II. Pp. 383-508 and 8 engraved plates (3 folio size and folded, 1 map), depicting the apparatus for measuring. First appearance of an importent paper, which contributed to the discussion of the dimension of the earth. William Mudge was appointed in 1791 to the ordnance trigonometrical survey, and became superintendent of the survey in 1798 and in that same year was also elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Shortly afterwards, he completed the first ever measurement of an arc of meridian stretching from Dunnose on the Isle of Wight to Clifton in Yorkshire. This was regarded as a very considerable advance in the scientific work of what had by then become the Ordnance Survey and contributed significantly to the international debate about the precise figure of the earth.

ÅNGSTRÖM, A.J. - ÅNGSTRÖM'S HEAT BAR.

lyn49234
Upsal, C.A. Leffler, 1860. 4to. Uncut and unopened. Offprint from "Actes de la Soc. Roy. des Sciences d'Upsala", Series 3ieme. T. III. (2),22 pp. First edition of Ångström's importent paper on the transformation of heat through materials. Angstrom determined the conductivity of the material of a bar by periodically heating and cooling it. The bar was heated and cooled periodically by passing steam and water at regular intervals through a chamber at one end of the bar ... In this way, the temperature at points along the bar fluctuate periodically and on account of surface radiation the temperature amplitude diminishes as the distance from the region of supply increases. In 1868, Ångström created a spectrum chart of solar radiation that expresses the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum in multiples of one ten-millionth of a millimetre, or 1×10-10 metres. This unit of length later became known as the ångström, Å.
