New York, Academic Press Inc, 1967. 8vo. In the original orange printed wrappers. One library stamp and two library labels pasted on to front wrapper. A white label stating the issue's name and date pasted on to back wrapper. Internally very fine and clean. Pp. 522-52. [Entire issue: 447-552 + 6 pages with commercials]. First printing of Shannon's paper on lower bounds to error probability. This was his "final effort to establish tight upper and lower bounds on error probability for the DMC. Earlier, Robert Fano [22] had discovered, but not completely proved, the sphere-packing lower bound on error probability. In [20], [21], the sphere-packing bound was proven rigorously, and another lower bound on error probability was established which was stronger at low data rates. The proof of the sphere-packing bound given here was quite complicated; it was later proven in a simpler way." (Gallager, Claude E. Shannon: A Retrospective on His Life, Work, and Impact, 2001, Pp. 2691-2)."Claude E. Shannon invented information theory and provided the concepts, insights, and mathematical formulations that now form the basis for modern communication technology. In a surprisingly large number of ways, he enabled the information age."(Ibid.).The issue contain the following papers:Gold, E. lyn45566
La Haye, Nijhoff, 1871. Uncut in orig. printed wrappers. Frontwrapper frayed at edges and with some nicks. In "Archives Néerlandaises des Science Exactes et Naturelles.", Tome 6. II,VIII,483,(1) pp. a. 10 lithographed plates, some in colour. De Vries' paper: pp. 117-126. Internally clean and fine, partly unopened. First appearance of this importent paper on osmosis, in which De Vries gave the name of 'PLASMOLYSIS" to a chemical concentration of the cytoplasm and linked it with the increased osmotic pressure outside the cell. he also introduces the concept "isotronic", denoting the ration of concentrations, the 'isotronic coefficient'."In 1871 he was studying the changes induced in fragments of beetroot immersed in various solutions. The sugar and the cytoplasmic pigment never entered the bath. In contrast, if the concentration of cane sugar or sodium chloride in the external liquid were raised, the cytoplasm contracted, returning to its normal volume when exposed to pure ayer. The impermeability of the cell wall to cane sugar and sodium chloride and the ready passage of water through it was thus established. De Vries gave the name of plasmolysis to this concentration.."

Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, Beijer, 1902. 4to. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Acta Mathematica", Vol, 25, 1902. Entire volume offered. Stamps to title page, otherwise a fine and clean copy. pp. 1-86.[Entire volume: (4), 383 pp]. First appearance of Painlevé's important paper in which he introduced some of his transcendents, now know as "Painlevé transcendents".Painlevé transcendents are solutions to certain nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equations in the complex plane with the Painlevé property (the only movable singularities are poles), but which are not generally solvable in terms of elementary functions. "In old problems in which the difficulties seemed insurmountable, Painlevé defined new transcendentals for singular points of differential equations of a higher order than the first. In particular he determined every equation of the second order and first degree whose critical points are fixed. The results of these studies are applicable to the equations of analytical mechanics which admit rational or algebraic first integrals with respect to the velocities. Proving, in the words of Hadamard’s éloge, that "continuing [the work of] Henri Poincaré was not beyond human capacity," Painlevé extended the known results concerning the n-body problem. He also corrected certain accepted results in problems of friction and of the conditions of certain equilibriums when the force function does not pass through a maximum."Paul Painlevé later became the French prime minister.
