Published in 23 intermittent black-and-white issues from 1979-1994, Real Life was devoted to providing an outlet for a circle of artists who did not feel properly represented in the mainstream art world at the time--many of whom are now grouped with the Pictures and Post-Pictures artists. The anthology features both artists and art historians writing on art, media and popular culture--oftentimes infusing a new kind of humor into their cultural critiques--as well as original pictorial contributions. It includes writings by and about Eric Bogosian, Kim Gordon, Dan Graham, Barbara Kruger, Thomas Lawson, Allan McCollum, John Miller, Matt Mullican, Richard Prince, David Robbins, Michael Smith, Ed Ruscha, Jeff Wall and Lawrence Weiner, to name a few, as well as visual projects by Sherrie Levine, James Welling, Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Group Material, among others."

Eddie Martinez & Chuck Webster:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir57727
New York: Picture Box and ZieherSmith, 2008. Two small 8vos in hardcover, complete with obi. 128 pages in all. Illustrated in color. Fine set. First edition. - INSCRIBED by Chuck Webster with colored pencils to half title, dated 2011. - "This two-volume set features the psychedelic, expressionistic figuration of Eddie Martinez in one volume and the Thomas Nozkowski-esque abstractions of Chuck Webster in the other. Both Brooklyn-based artists, represented in New York by Zieher-Smith, are enamored with paint--both, in fact, embrace painting's historical baggage, its romantic and spiritual undertones. Martinez combines fearlessly expressive paint handling with a feel for cartoon imagery and personal symbology. Webster, on the other hand, makes Minimal talismanic works that are formally rigorous and impeccably polished. Together they present a friendly argument for the myriad possibilities of contemporary painting. An interview with the artists, who are old friends, and a selection of their collaborative drawings form a bridge between the books. First monographs for both artists, these volumes also include essays by Joao Ribas and Geoffrey Young."

Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59945
Toulouse, France: Les Abattoirs / Geneva: Galerie Guy Bärtschi, 2001. 4to in original large and heavy hardcover with dustjacket. 111 pages, richly illustrated with finely printed reproductions. French and English text. Sunning to jacket else very good copy. First edition. "Henri Michaux used a loose and spontaneous form of frottage, which he called "apparitions", and saw it as a path to a parallel reality, just as he did with his automatic writing and mescaline. His frottages, made by rubbing a pencil over textured objects, became a source of experimentation for many Surrealist artists. The technique combines drawing, graphic art and sculpture and involves transferring the shape of an object by rubbing a coloring agent over paper lying on its surface."

Christines Picture Book is a beautifully bound scrapbook of 122 leaves, originally dating from 1859 meant as gift and not for publication. On the right-hand pages and some of the left-hand ones, more than 1,000 pictures of widely varying kinds have been pasted in, most of them printed in colour or hand-coloured. In many instances, amusing little hand-written captions or verses have been added. It was compiled by Hans Christian Andersen and his friend, a Danish magistrate named Adolph Drewsen, who is named on the first sheet as being Christine's grandfather. The occasion was her third birthday, 30 October 1859. Christine was the great-grandchild of Jonas Collin, a civil servant who had been of great support to the young Hans Christian Andersen, and to whose family Andersen became closely attached. Its 122 pages contain over 1,000 pasted-in pictures plus a few paper cuts, an art form at which Andersen was adept. The images were collected from all kinds of European publications, and the result offers a unique pictorial snapshot of European culture of the 1850s.

Heavy and extra shipping will apply. Islamic Spirituality - Classical, Early & Medieval Works on Islamic Mysticism (Sufism): Ibn al-Farid or Ibn Farid; (1181 – 1234) was an Arab poet. His name is Arabic for "son of the obligator" (the one who divides the inheritance between the inheritors), as his father was well regarded for his work in the legal sphere. He was born in Cairo to parents from Hama in modern Syria, lived for some time in Mecca, and died in Cairo. His poetry is entirely Sufic and he was esteemed as the greatest mystic poet of the Arabs. Some of his poems are said to have been written in ecstasies. The poetry of Shaykh Umar Ibn al-Farid is considered by many to be the pinnacle of Arabic mystical verse, though surprisingly he is not widely known in the West. (Rumi, probably the best known in the West of the great Sufi poets, wrote primarily in Persian, not Arabic.) Ibn al-Farid's two masterpieces are The Wine Ode, a beautiful meditation on the "wine" of divine bliss, and "The Poem of the Sufi Way", a profound exploration of spiritual experience along the Sufi Path and perhaps the longest mystical poem composed in Arabic. Both poems have inspired in-depth spiritual commentaries throughout the centuries, and they are still reverently memorized by Sufis and other devout Muslims today.Publishers note: "His prose and poetry reflect his profound knowledge of the intellectual heritage of mankind. His understanding of traditional symbolism hardly finds a parallel in our times. His being multi-lingual gives him direct access to the repositories of knowledge. His understanding of world spirituality deepens his own spiritual experience. Farid is one of the outstanding masterpieces of Saraiki mystical poetry and belongs to the rich and illustrious tradition of wisdom poetry, or contemplative poetry in the Islamic civilization. It reaches heights of poetic excellence. It has expanded the Kafi genre in both its vertical and horizontal dimensions. It has revealed the essence of poetry which is a passionate openness on to the Transcendent, a passion intimately linked with knowledge participating in Truth, Beauty and Love. Understanding arid is a sequel to Dr. Shahzad Qaiser’s earlier work of translating Khawaja Ghulam Farid whose original text and translations have been kept. The verses of the Diwan, in the current work, have been explained for fostering a plain understanding of the doctrines, without going deep into the technicalities of metaphysics and its realisation, to facilitate an understanding of Khawaja Ghulam Farid’s experience of ‘love and gnosis’ and thereby his attainment of ‘deliverance and union’ within the traditional matrix.".

Campos-Pons, Maria Magdalena. - Freiman, Lisa D. (ed.). - Enwezor, Okwui (foreword):
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir58636
Yale University Press, 2007. Large oversized and heavy hardcover with dustjacket, now protected. 183 pages, with 58 colour and 7 b/w illustrations. Fine copy. 1st edition. - "A stunning mid-career retrospective of an important and influential contemporary Afro-Cuban artist With a diverse oeuvre ranging from painting to mixed-media installations to performance, video, and photography, María Magdalena Campos-Pons is one of the most significant artists to emerge from post-Revolutionary Cuba. Her evocative works probe questions of race, class, cultural hybridism, and national identities in African diasporic communities. María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Everything Is Separated by Water is the first full-scale survey of the artists career. The title, borrowed from one of her works, evokes at once the dangerous sea crossings faced by her enslaved ancestors from Africa and her Cuban contemporaries seeking greater freedom in America, and the sense of dislocation felt when physical and geopolitical barriers divide family and friends, past and future. Lisa D. Freiman considers how Campos-Pons s practice, which is predicated on concepts of separation, memory, and fragmentation, developed and transformed from her artistic training and early production in Cuba in the 1980s through her move to the United States in 1991 and her subsequent recognition as a major figure in the international art world. Okwui Enwezor interprets Campos-Pons expressive materials--reassembled fragments of lost traditions and symbols, and memories of personal and collective history, religion, and mythology--within the context of post-colonial theory".
