(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1813). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1813 - Part II. Pp. 263-279. Clean and fine. First printing of an importent paper in the history of chemistry in which he decomposited ammonium salts by heated potassium."In 1812 Davy,,,,said that fluoboric acid and fluosilicic acid are 'compounds of a principle unknown in the separate state but analogous to chlorine, with silicium and boron', and 'the hydrofluoric acid is a compound of the same principle with hydrogene and water'. In 1813-14 ( 1813 the paper offered) Davy described his attempts to isolate the radical, which following a sugesstion by Ampere, he called fluorine.." (Partington IV, p.58)."Humphry Davy was one of the most brilliant chemists of the early nineteenth century. His early study of nitrous oxide brought him his first reputation, but his later and most importent investigations were devoted to electrochemistry. Following Galvani's experiments and the discovery of the voltaic pile, interest in galvanic electricity had become widespread. The first electrolysis by means of the pile was carried out in 1800 by Nicholson and Carisle, who obtained oxygen and hydrogen from water. Davy began to examine the chemical effects of electricity in 1800, and his numerous discoveries were presented in his Bakerian lectures." Another paper printed together with Davy's paper: John Pond: "Catalogue of North Pole Distances of Eighty-four principal fixed Stars, deduced from Observations made with the Mural Circle at the Royal Observatory.", pp. 280-304.

(Paris, Bachelier), 1840. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome XI (No.18). Pp. (667-) 716. (Entire issue offered). Becquerel's paper:pp. 702-703. Some marginal brownspots, margins slightly soiled, light browning an creasing. First printing of an importent paper in the history of photochemistry as he here discovered some effects of coloured rays of the solar spectrum."Edmund Becquerel seems to be the first person to observe, in 1840 (in the paper offered), that the latent daguerreotype image which had been underexposed could be intensified if re-exposed to the yellow and red rays of the spectrum and then developed with mercury... Explaining this phenomenon, Becquerel called the yellow-red continuing rays ("rayon continuateurs") in contrast to the primary rays, which exicited or produced the light image and which he called exiciting rays ("rayons excitateurs").... They are dependent on the wave lenght of the light."(Eder "History of Photography", pp. 265 ff.)"Becquerel was an early experimenter in photography. In 1840 he discovered that the silver halides, natively insensitive to red and yellow light, became sensitive to that part of the spectrum in proportion to their exposure to blue, violet and ultraviolet light, allowing Daguerreotypes and other photographic materials to be developed by bathing in strong red or yellow light rather than by chemical treatment. In practice this technique was rarely used." (Wikipedia).

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1979. 8vo. Original full green cloth. The entire volume 43, nr. 2 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". Library stamp to pasted down front free end-paper. Minor bumping to extremities. A nice and clean copy. [Entire volume: pp. 809-1367]. First edition of the first description of Bell System's Traffic Service Position System (TSPS). It was designed by Bell Labs in Columbus, Ohio to replace traditional cord switchboards. Research at Bell Systems was aimed at finding ways to reduce operator labor which at that time was was the largest expenditure when operating a telephone network. "A new cordless operator position was designed to illustrate how this operator service might be implemented. Trials at New York Telephone Co. demonstrated the feasibility of both the customer dialing of the prefix and the efficiency of the new operator's position. After the trial, a development was started to add such positions, by then known as the "Traffic Service Position" [...]. It was an example of the electronic art forcing out the old electromechanical art with many vested interest. The collection of trunks, a ferreed switching network, an SPC, and the positions formed a system called the "Traffic Service Position System". Being the first, it was called the "No. 1 TSPS". (Chapuis,, 100 Years of Telephone Switching (1878-1978), 1982, p. 170).Articles contained in the Traffic Service Position System No. 1-issue:1. Staehler, R.E.; Hayward, W.S. London, Williams and Norgate, 1901. 8vo. Orig. printed wrappers w. some loss to upper and lower part of spine and a bit of wear to inner hinges, otherwise nice and clean. Uncut. Frontisp. (Portrait of its Immanence the Absolute), 141, (3) pp. Not common first (and only) edition of this parody on the important philosophical quarterly "Mind", which contained important articles and reviews of almost all important analytic philosophers of the early 20th century. This issue, which is called the "Special Illustrated Christmas Number", substituting the vol. 10, no. 4 of Mind, is written by the philosopher and treasurer of the Mind Association from 1900 to 1936, F.C.S. Schiller (1864-1937), who unsuccessfully tried to hand in his "Riddles of the Sphinx" from 1891 as a Ph.D. thesis. At a first glance it looks exactly like the "real" periodical w. same colour of wrappers, same sort of typing etc., but at a second glance, all of the contents are sarcastic. There are articles like "The Critique of Pure Rot" by I. Cant; "New Platonic Dialogues. I. the "Aporia" of the "Lysis"; II. A Sequel to the "Republic"; III. "Congratulations" "; "Zur Phänomenologie des absoluten Unsinns" by Prof. Dr. G. W. Flegel; "Pholisophy's Last Word" by I.M. Greening; New Aphorisms of Herakleitos (like "Asses prefer the sweepings of the lecture rooms to my original researches", "There is a way to lecture and a way not. But the drier way is better than the damper", "There is a way to lecture and a way from lecture; and the way to and the way from are the same: it is a short cut") etc., etc.
