Le Chatelier's paper: pp. 1401-1411. First printing of the milestone paper in which Stieltjes introduced the "Stieltjes Integral". He is often called "the father of the analytic theory of continued fractions" for his work in this area. "On 18 June 1894 he published Recherches sur les fractions continues in Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences. A fuller version of this work appeared in the Annales de la Faculté des Sciences de Toulouse." The integral which he introduced here while solving the moment problem, that is, given the moments of all orders of a body, find the distribution of its mass.".... a mathematical milestone. The work represents the first general treatment of continued fractions as part of complex analytic function theory; previously, only special cases had been considered." Pearson's paper: pp. 386-417. It is a statistical formulation of Galton’s law in the form of a multiple regression of offspring on "midparental" ancestry, with deductions therefrom of theoretical values for various regression and correlation coefficients between kin, and comparisons of such theoretical values with values derived from observational material. (DSB).The title "Contributions to the Mathematical Theory of Evolution" or "Mathematical Contributions. . ." was used as the general title of 17 memoirs, numbered II through XIX, published in the Philosophical Transactions or as Drapers’ Company Research Memoirs, and of 8 unnumbered papers published in the Proceedings of he Royal Society "Mathematical" became and remained the initial word from III(1896)on.

(Stockholm, F.& G. Beier), 1885. 4to. Orig. printed wrappers (to Acta Mathematica 4:3). Extracted from "Acta Mathematica", Vol. 4. Pp. 201-312. Clean and fine. First appearance of a major paper on differential equations of the first order"...the whole theory of automorphic functions was from the start guided by the idea of integrating linear differential equations with algebraic coefficients. Poincaré simultaneously investigated the local problem of linear differential equation in the neighborhood of an "irregular" singular point, showing for the first time how asymptotic developments could be obtained for the integrals. A little later (1884, the paper offered) he took up the question, also started by I.L. Fuchs, of the determination of all differential equations of the first order (in the complex domain) algebraic in y and y' and having fixed singular points; his rechearches was to be extended by Picard for equations of the second order, and to lead to the spectacular results of Painlevé and his school at the beginning of the tweentieth century."(DSB).
