lyn43453
(London, W.Nicol, 1826). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1826 - Part III. Pp. 484-493 a. pp. 494-528 a. 1 engraved plate. The plate dampstained in upper margin, outside image. Clean and fine. These two important papers were presented to The Royal Academy at the same date, and stitched together from the Transactions. In his paper FARADAY observes importent relations between tension, pressure, temperature and gravitation as he proves that any kind of matter, not only air, ceases to assume the elastic form, whenever the gravitation of its particles is stronger than the elasticity of its vapour. The loss of tension necessary for effecting this object may be accomplished in two ways, either by extreme dilatation, or by cold. The paper by BBBAGE is the second of two papers on electromagnetism, the first written together with his friend J.F.W. Herschel."The curious phenomena of electromagnetism were beginning to be discovered during this period, and inevitably Babbage took an interest. In the spring of 1825 Gay Lussac visited London and described Arago's experiments with rotating discs. Plates of copper and other substances set in rapid motion in a magnetic field and under a magnetized needle caused it to deviate from its direction, finally dragging it round with them. At this time Herschel was secretary of the Royal Society and had rooms in Devonshire Street. Babbage and he carried out some quite extensive experiments in Babbage's house. They tried the effect with discs of many different substances using Babbage's lathe: only metals and graphite showed the effect and they concluded that the conductivity of the disc was the importent point...however they did not solve the problem of electromagnetic induction: æater their friend Michael Faraday did."(Hyman in "Charles Babbage. Pioneer of the Computer", p.58). - Babbage's first paper on electrical and magnetic rotation is listed by Hook & Norman :35, but not the paper offered.

Berlin, Gruyter X Co., 1930. 4to. Orig. orange printed wrappers. Offprint/Sonderausgabe aus Sitzungsberichten... pp. (1)-13. First edition in the rare Offprint, having separate printed title and separate pagination. See Weil No. 170, where this is not mentioned. The early Offprints from "Sitzungsberichten..." are called "Sonderabdruck" up to Weil No.165 (including this). From Weil 166 they are called "Sonderausgabe...". - Before 161 (up to 160) the Offprints do not have separate title and pagination (the pagination follows the numbering in the periodical). From 166 the Offprint has both separate printed title and pagination. - ( So Weil Nos 161-165 is still "Abdruck", but with separate title and pagination). These facts are not mentioned in the bibliographies.

Stockholm, Lars Salvius, 1744. Samtidigt hpergamentsbd. (14),190,22 pp. samt 14 kobberstukne plancher. Titelvignetten og andre vignetter og 3 foldeplancher kolorerede. Et par udsnit i titelbladet, hvor gl. ejernavne bortklippet. Uden teksttab. Lidt spredte brunpletter, men ganske velbevaret. First Swedish edition of Clairaut's renowned elementary geometry "Élémens de géométrie", 1741.Clairaut’s Élémens de géométrie is linked to the more liberal school. He wanted geometry to be rediscovered by beginners and therefore put together, for himself and for them, a very optimistic history of mathematical thought that reflected the concepts of his contemporaries Diderot and Rousseau. (DSB)."I intended to go back to what might have given rise to geometry; and I attempted to develop its principles by a method natural enough so that one might assume it to be the same as that of geometry’s first inventors, attempting only to avoid any false steps that they might have had to take" [Élémens de géométrie, preface].

FRØKEN MARY (MARY RICHMOND ?) - MØNSTERBOG FOR DEN FRØBELSKE BESKÆFTIGELSESPÆDAGOGIK.

Uden år, ca. 1920-30. 4to. (26x24 cm.). Leporello i originalt helshirt. Samme fru Bagger bliver senere den første rektor for Fröbelseminariet. (Se "Børn og Unge", 2003 nr. 51)

MAJOR, C.I. FORSYTH. - THE EXTINCT LEMUR OF MADAGASCAR.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42670
(London, Harrison and Sons, 1894). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", 1894, Vol. 185 - Part I. Pp 15-38 a. 3 lithographed plates. Clean and fine. First printing of this importent paper, relating the discovery of a new family Megaladapidae with the genus and species of the extinct giant lemur of Madagascar. Major collected the bones on his expedition to Madagascar in the years 1894-96."Its tree-grasping attributes probably made Megaladapis vulnerable to changes to the forests of Madagascar. Upon human arrival between 1,500 and 2,000 years ago, the forests of Madagascar were cleared to make farmland. Unable to adapt to these new environmental changes imposed by man and being a tempting target for hunters, Megaladapis became extinct approximately 500 years ago, around the time of European discovery of Madagascar."
