Schmidt's paper: pp. 141-151, textillustr. A tear to inner lower corners of pp. 24-32. (not affecting Schmidt's paper). Clean and fine. First printing of Schmidt's full exposition, in which he describes his discovery of the radioactivity of Thorium. Schmidt and Marie Curie independently demonstrated the radioactive quality, but Schmidt's demonstration took place a few months before Curie's. The discovery was announced, but not described in full, in a short message published in "Verhandl. d. Phys. Gesellsch. zu Berlin, 1898."Schmidt made his discovery while examining "many elements and compounds" in an effeort to determine whether any of the rays that were emitted bore a resemblance to those that Henri becquerel had found emerging from uranium and uranium compounds. He located only one such element, thorium, and immediately conducted absorption, ionization, reflection, refradction, and poklarization studies to determine the characteristics of its rays. Having combined a misinterpretation of Becquerel's with one of his own, Schmidt concluded that thorium rays most resembled Röntgen rays - a conclusion that soon required revisoln in view of the researches of Marie Curie and Ernest Rutherford."(DSB XII, p. 191.

Cambridge University Press, 1954. 8vo. Orig. blue full cloth w. gilt lettering to spine, orig. blue and white dust-jacket w. some overall soiling, but no loss. Price-clipped. Owner's name stamped to front free end-paper. (6), 129 pp. First edition of Ryle's second main work, in which he sets out to discuss true issues and dilemmas of the actual life of man.Gilbert Ryle (1900-1976) was an immensely influential British philosopher, who represented the ordinary language philosophers so strongly influenced by Wittgenstein. He was also greatly influenced by Bertrand Russell and his theory of descriptions and the conception of analysis embodied in that. Influenced by the idea of misleading expressions, which can be sorted out only with the help of logic, Ryle establishes his view of philosophy as cartography. Just like the inhabitants of a space on earth can talk about that space to the cartographer, so the ordinary user of a language can talk to the philosopher. However, in both cases the practical knowledge of the ordinary user must be transformed into the universal terms of the expert in order for him to say anything meaningful. In his "Dilemmas" Ryle, with the aid of the tools of the practicing philosopher, solves a number of puzzles for everyday man and makes him understand the meaning and use of philosophy in general.

First edition in the rare Offprint with its separate printed title and separate pagination. From Weil 166 they are called "Sonderausgabe...". - Before 161 (up to 160) the Offprints do not have separate title and pagination (the pagination follows the numbering in the periodical). From 166 the Offprint has both separate printed title and pagination. - ( So Weil Nos 161-165 is still "Abdruck", but with separate title and pagination). These facts are not mentioned in the bibliographies.
